I dislike April because almost everyone I've known passes away in April. I lost my aunt on Friday. She was my godmother. She's the "Marie" from "GinaMarie", which for those of you who don't know, is my real first name.
My aunt was a pint-sized powerhouse at around 5 feet tall...directly opposite of her 6' 5" husband. She was a calm, quiet force which was always the perfect counterbalance to my energetic and exuberant uncle. A nurse by trade, she was among the most caring people I've ever met.
She never wanted people to make a fuss about her. She always let the spotlight shine down those around her.
One of the best attributes I learned from her was how to be a calm, quiet force. It is a discipline she perfected throughout her life, and one I can only hope to emulate someday.
She proved that even today when a major storm hit as we were driving to her grave site. We were unable to bury her, which in turn, spared her grandkids the pain of watching her go into the ground. You'd be hard pressed to convince me that she didn't make that a request of hers.
For years, I've always wondered why my parents would give me two first names, especially when paired with a 12 letter last name.
I realize that it went beyond their quirky humor to see how many letters I could learn at a young age, and beyond just giving me the name of my godmother.
I think my parents maybe thought I'd need something to balance me out. And I think that by naming me GinaMarie, they knew that it would be the perfect blend of the boisterous Gina and the calm that is and will always be my Aunt Marie.
Everyone who passes, goes too soon. This is why I'm such a stickler for trying to appreciate the limited time I have with people. And why, I care more about having time with people then anything else I ever receive. Spending time with the people you love is the most valuable gift you can receive in life.
I think we all forget that sometimes, but its something we should strive to actively remember. You never know when that gift will be gone...but you do realize, sometimes too late, that when it is gone it is all you ever ultimately wanted.
We all have limited time. But nothing will ever be more important than taking the time to say I love you.
As the priest said today, "Saying I love you is the way we say that you will live eternally as I carry you as part of my heart."
I can say with certainty that I love all of you and nothing makes my heart feel stronger than carrying you all, whether you are here or beyond, in my heart.
Smooches,
G
