Humbled

I'm so grateful for the well wishes and amazing outreach I received about my new position.

One of the founders of my old company even sent me a message. That blew my mind.

I get that I work hard but I know so many people that do and deserve ongoing praise for doing such amazing work and getting no credit.

So, I find it hard to accept but I am so thankful for it.

Oh and I'm publicly stating that someone who has been calling me SVP and expressing his pride in this career move (despite my crying and whining) was RIGHT. And a huge thank you to him for all the support and butt kicking he did to get me to accept this as a good thing.

You down with SVP?

Yea you know me. This isn't that big of a surprise to anyone who knows me or to her at these blogs but I finally got to announce today that yes I am a senior vice President for a PR agency. I don't really know what this means Beyond that I continue to work ridiculous hours and I continue to work in the fields that I love.

My best hope is that I get to bring on the team that I see as my dream team and I get to continue to work in the fields that I love most and built my career around. But I will say that it's nice to be appreciated after so many years in the business. But I want to thank everyone that is been so supportive about appreciating my title. So many of my friends have been so welcoming and saying that they've been so proud of me. I still don't see it but I keep trying to recognize it.

Hopefully, I will one day have the work life that I want, but for now all I can hope for is the team that I want on the clients that already have. It's good to be among friends and hopefully be able to build that circuit up.

PS there's been 1 million typos lately and I'm sorry because all of this is voice to text. Love you all

And that's a day...

7 hours of commuting...a jumper that was involved with a double murder. Now that would've been a decent excuse for "quite a day"...but after I finally made my way to the office and heading into meetings I see "shoots fired Capitol and White House on lockdown". I used to work 2 blocks from the Capitol. I had just blogged about the last active shooter.

My new office is 2 blocks from the White House.

All I could think was "Awh man..."

So I texted the few people that usually are watching news and contacting me immediately. Only to find out that none of them were watching the news...and I freaked them out more.

Sigh...but still here...

Where you be?

I get it. I haven't blogged. I'm working like a dog despite my best efforts to let history repeat. But here's the deal, while I've been putting in the hours my mentality has shifted greatly. I actually have an end goal in mind.

Right now I'm stuck in Baltimore due to police activity. The entire stretch through DC is on the same hold. I'm literally just been told it's a jumper but we've been stopped for 30+ minutes which never sits well with my nerves after living through 9/11, 2003 power out, DC earthquake and multiple Capitol lockdowns including one with an active shooter where I held an entire conference call under my desk as we were advised to avoid Windows. This was difficult given my entire office was one giant glass window.

But the difference is this...a 20-something girl just called her dad. Sheer stress and panic in her voice. "I'm going to be so late to work, Dad! This is ridiculous."

Closing in on 20+ years of working, I'm quietly here...just hoping it's anything but something that involves me making a run for it but knowing this is why I always pack sneakers.

Work...they will have to wait. I'm of no use to them dead.

Long distance dedication

Well, not that long. Zzquil makes for interesting dreams. But I'm the meantime, sending this song out to the person who introduced me to Weezer and the people I know that need to shake their booty and get back to the good life. (Self included).

It's Tuesday...only 4 work days left!

"The Good Life"

When I look in the mirror
I can't believe what I see
Tell me, who's that funky dude
Staring back at me
Broken, beaten down
Can't even get around
Without an old-man cane
I fall and hit the ground
Shivering in the cold
I'm bitter and alone

Excuse the bitching
I shouldn't complain
I should have no feeling
Cos feeling is pain
As everything I need
Is denied me
And everything I want
Is taken away from me
But who do I got to blame?
Nobody but me

And I don't wanna be an old man anymore
It's been a year or two since I was out on the floor
Shaking booty, making sweet love all the night
It's time I got back to the good life
It's time I got back, it's time I got back
And I don't even know how I got off the track
I wanna go back, yeah!

Screw this crap, I've had it!
I ain't no Mr. Cool
I'm a pig, I'm a dog
So excuse me if I drool
I ain't gonna hurt nobody
Ain't gonna cause a scene
Just need to admit
That I want sugar in my tea
Hear me (hear me) I want sugar in my tea!

I don't wanna be an old man anymore
It's been a year or two since I was out on the floor
Shaking booty, making sweet love all the night
It's time I got back to the good life
It's time I got back, it's time I got back
And I don't even know how I got off the track
I wanna go back, yeah!

I wanna go back, I wanna go back
And I don't even know how I got off the track
It's time I got back, it's time I got back
And I don't even know how I got off the track
I wanna go back, yeah!

And I don't wanna be an old man anymore
It's been a year or two since I was out on the floor
Shaking booty, making sweet love all the night
It's time I got back to the good life
It's time I got back, it's time I got back
And I don't even know how I got off the track
It's time I got back, it's time I got back
And I don't even know how I got off the track
I wanna go back (I wanna go back)

Getting down to Business

I was so determined to start this new gig in a better frame of mind than my second to last job. A decade ago, I went home and cried after my first day because I didn't think I was smart enough to be among the brilliant people I met.

Sadly, starting this was similar yet different. I cried because it's a life I really didn't want to go back to living. Hearing the staff talk about all nighters, sleeping 4 hours a night and working until 4 am... it's really not where I want to be.

So, yes, after screaming to hold the train doors, I cried on the train ride home. And when I walked in at 8:45 pm after yet another 12+ hour day, I spent the night crying on the couch.

I even cancelled my weekend plans because I was just out of it. Me + trapping myself indoors = bad things.

Today is a new day.

Trying so hard to get myself on track and make this a positive situation. I received some emails from folks who are super excited that I'm where I am - that was helpful.

I prepared myself, woke up early, got my early morning zen walk in with my trusty furry BFF and am on the go.

Here's hoping I can make some lemonade out of these lemons. If not, I'm adding some vodka and spiking that shit.

Oops...

Sorry to the one reader who read my blog post from last night. I took it down. Sometimes, I try to decide what to post and what to keep in my files. That was probably one for the files.

Wiped out after a trying few days...pondering bailing on the girls night. As much as I want to ride go karts, just not feeling it.

17 1/2 hours later...

Finally in my hotel room. What. A. Day. Started off cleaning up doggy puke...made it to DC, where my new office is literally down the street from my old apartment.

Managed to find the non-working toilet and use it by accident. Awesome.

"Wine down" on my first day agenda wasn't a typo. I did my best to behave and had a Guinness. It's like these people sniffed me out because the next thing I heard was "how about a vodka and soda?"

I tried. I was mocked relentlessly when I said "no thanks, I just had a Guinness and we're heading to a leadership dinner."

New coworkers, "AND????!!"

Sigh. Karma is a bitch so I relented to the same peer pressure I probably gave a ton of my employees.

People never seem to believe that my career involves a shit ton of socializing - mixing business with pleasure (aka dinners and drinks). Don't get me wrong, it has its moments of fun. I mean I'm not cleaning up crap. But I'd be lying if I didn't say that it gets old when you want to be home...with your loved ones. Likely that would still involve drinks and dinner but, not as much work.

But I'm here. It feels good to be back in DC. I do miss this place, but I still miss home too. It will be a nice balance of the two I guess.

Not risking lack of sleep tonight so I'm off to zzquil land. Hoping I still get up, hit the gym and head back to the new grind.

Miss and love the people that know I'm missing and loving them...

Gina out.

Maybe a bit superhero

Maybe. Working on under 5 hours of sleep and blogging to keep my eyes open. Woke up at 2:30 am and tossed from then until 5 am.

My now-thinks-she's a guard dog promptly rose at 2:45 am to run downstairs and bark at the backyard.

5 am hits and I pray that Spotify will give me something good. It starts me out with Can't Hurry Love...which, timing is of course priceless. And then it follows with The Girl by City & Colour...which again, thanks Universe for the timing.

But I was up, woozy, nauseous from lack of sleep but running smoothly.

5:42 am I head downstairs. Dog who typically has to be dragged out of bed is racing urgently. Guess I wasn't the only one with stomach jitters.

5:50 am - eagerly awaiting car service. Dog comes in and immediately vomits. All over the carpet. Everywhere.

5:50-5:55 am - I'm fingers deep in puppy puke and resolve bc I didn't need that just showered smell anyway.

5:55 am - call car service bc no one has contacted me.

5:58 am - peer outside and driver is, in fact, there.

6 am - hop in car and proceed to do my normal "get to know your driver".

6:25 am - arrive 50 minutes early for train.

And now I'm here. I just bought myself breakfast which I'm insisting the calorie count can't be right on this bagel I no longer want to eat and will wash that down with Diet Coke.

Damn, I. Am. Nervous. And incredibly tired knowing that I am not even 2 hours in to a 16 hour day.

According to Phil Collins: You may not be able to hurry love and you just have to wait...but I hope I can speed up time.

This life would be so much easier if I was coming home to someone who has opposable thumbs who could at least clean up their own puke, if need be. Ok...it's not about that at all. It's about being able to curl up and raise the white flag after being on the clock 36 out of 48 hours.

Needed this today...

Need some forgiving of myself today.

Actions and Reactions

Repayment is never quite how you picture it. Actions speak louder than words. A book I read recently pointed out that the things you don't like in other people are the things you don't like in yourself. This couldn't be more true. I hate seeing things in other people I don't like. And I hate being right when my instincts are telling me something I don't want to believe.

New dawn, new day...

So...early...

My body (or my mind) loves to do dry runs when it knows it's going to be up early. Being awake at 5:20 am and knowing that I need to be up even earlier tomorrow sure ain't priceless. Ugh.

My dog is so angry about the time she's huffing away. How dare I interrupt her sleep?

Time to get some more zzzzs since 6 hours no longer cuts it for me.

Stop the Adulting!

Seriously, way too much. I start my new gig in less than two days. I've never had any assistance or any title that's carried any real meaning before so this is a very bizarre reality I'm entering.

I've been waiting on getting my travel info for over a week now and today I heard from the admin who said she is my "support". I literally had to fire an intern once who refused to make a photocopy, so hearing that someone handles my travel and expenses on a regular basis is weird at best.

She didn't exactly get my humor or why I sounded so strange when she asked me for my food preferences.

I'm not this professional. At my second to last job, it was common knowledge that I had a 5th of Makers in my right-hand bottom drawer. The left was filled with a blanket, Mardi Gras beads and a cowboy hat.

I'm hoping I can at least play the role of adult for a bit before they catch on that I'm incapable of being one. In true DC likes to mess with me form, they're shutting down the entire metro so, me getting around should be a blast.

Back in reality, my dog whose diet consists of my purée chicken and vegetables cooked by yours truly, decided to add dead rodent to her diet. This didn't end well for anyone but I'm guessing it's a lesson she only needed to learn once.

And finally I had my first 20,000+ step day. I've been trying to get this forever so it was probably the highlight of my day.

Lots going on here...crazy times. Still lacking some very important things though, which never go unnoticed.

Kindness

This actually happened to me today. While I was doing that this little senior citizen who could barely walk upright was doing her treadmill and bike. She was so thin, I really admired that she would work out at all. In the locker room, she came up to me and said "I saw you out there. You were working hard!"

It was so sweet to say. It was also true, but she sure didn't need to take time to tell me.

I smiled and said "YOU were working hard. Anyone who comes here is working it." She lit up.

Nice to have moments like that.

Not a Super G day

In under an hour, I stained my pants, spilled water up my jacket, stubbed my toe and food fell all over the floor.

Time to get my bubble wrap suit and helmet.

All about the balance.

And a quick PSA

I know body shaming is a popular topic these days. People who post naked, plus size ads being banned from TV but Victoria's Secret models wearing less being pushed forth. I have way too much to say on this - personally and professionally.

But, here's my quick personal plea. Just don't. Don't talk to or judge anyone about their weight unless it's out of concern for their health. I've been through a lot body wise, scale wise. After going through many pictures of me while cleaning my closets yesterday, it's startling. This is me at what seems to be 17 (based on the hair, it was before my senior pics).

Hair aside, I wish I never listened to anyone who judged me. I can't tell you how many people called me fat. See the picture and read that again. I was told I was fat at that size on a regular basis - and not just by bullies at school. Even my yearbook has a wonderful wish from someone that they "hope my butt deflates."

It's funny now how many people don't judge me and love me for who I am. Trust me, I wish I looked like this girl, without all the torture she went through over her size.

Thanks to that and a ton of hormonal issues, that won't happen. But nothing scares me more than what all the young girls I know may have to endure. No one deserves to go through that only to hear years later that they were beautiful.

Ok...rant for the day is done. Enjoy life people. It's short.

Dynamite

Proud to report, I have (mostly) overcome my fear of doctors and all my 2,000 parts check out just fine and dandy. Ok, 1,998 parts because my annual eye appointment with my most favorite doctor ever isn't until July. But, the annuals are all through. Continue to get healthier through diet and exercise is always encouraged - and we're hitting that too.

So yay, after a few years of pre-cancer this, GI tract from hell, Utie...we have accomplished the main mission. Good health.

If I really think about that, it is a pretty big deal and one that I'm super grateful for in life. Things didn't look so hot a few years ago. Stress will, in fact, almost kill you. I have the lung blood clot, random chest cyst, MRSA issues, torn up GI tract and bum uterus to prove it.

But not today. My docs are so happy I'm mediating, exercising, doing what it takes. And the best part is, I'm not even blowing smoke up their bums.

Good health is definitely a balance with good life. Everyone goes off track, and for me, more times than I can count but I keep getting back up.

Mentally, I'm feeling strong today but every day is different. Again, not even a year ago, I was having major panic attacks. Rare now, but still do.

It's taken a lot of work to get here and some life change, time off for good behavior. I would've liked to get away before I start my new gig, but, I managed to pull a "What About Bob" and take a vacation from my problems at least.

Breathing easier. Every song I hear gives me a whole new writing idea...creative juices are flowing. Batteries charged.

I'm sure I will be a nervous wreck next week, but we're gelling today.

Here's my song of the day. I've posted this at least once a year. I love this song...I used to send it to an old high school friend when I would give him my "no man is an island" lecture. He was great at fading away. I still believe no man is an island and this song holds a lot of meaning for me for new reasons.

Enjoy this wonderful weather...

Walls by Tom Petty
Some days are diamonds

Some days are rocks
Some doors are open
Some roads are blocked

Sundowns are golden

Then fade away
But if I never do nothing
I'll get you back some day, 'cause

You got a heart so big
It could crush this town
And I can't hold out forever
Even walls fall down

All around your island

There's a barricade
That keeps out the danger
That holds in the pain

Sometimes you're happy

Sometimes you cry
Half of me is ocean
Half of me is sky, but

Some things are over

Some things go on
Part of me you carry
Part of me is gone, but

Disorderly Dog...

The po-po has been around my neighborhood for days now. First, it was a sedan and SUV doing a few rounds. Then it was a pack with sirens blaring. It's been crazy. Tonight one was stopped with spotlights on right by my street. I was finally going to ask what was up but, unfortunately my dog is a street thug.

As I went to approach a tiny shitzu came around the curve and my dog went bananas. So, instead, the cop had to watch me as I pulled Cujo across the street and over so she wouldn't continue to harass the 3 pound ball of fluff.

Sigh... So glad he didn't stop us. Of course if he did, he would've been killed by her totally dominating stop, drop and rolling over for a belly rub. All bark, this hound.

Madness begins tomorrow. After days of chill, tons of stuff going on. But, I accomplished my purging and gym goals. I have boxes of things to donate and sell. I also dropped off bags of clothes at the donation center.

Nothing is organized but that's never been my bag. I can organize a client, my work life, etc. but I'm just lost when it comes to organizing my personal stuff.

Oh well, at least I made a dent.

As for the gym, I've hit as hard as I could and made the elliptical my bitch. Hopefully, can keep it up as I start the new transition. If nothing else it keeps me sane.

Memoirs of a Goofball

Trying to enjoy my last few days of staycation and this wonderful weather. Dog refused to walk so we hung out in the backyard so I could swing and she could eat sticks.

Brought me back to a hilarious memory of this summer. Trying to be proactive and impress my superhero before he got home, I started picking up all the cut up wood from the trees that were lost in the tornado.

Only to discover halfway through that the logs were covered in ants and termites. Of course, this discovery was made as he was walking in the door, so he entered to me screaming like I was being attacked (because I was) and running around the backyard like I had ants in my pants (because I did). Always the calm to my storm, he held back laughter and said "maybe you should go ahead and re-shower." Wasn't like we were heading to the shore or anything...and I hadn't just got all ready less than an hour before.

After finally debugging and getting pretty again, we left. Upon arrival in OC, the dog proceeded to lunge at another dog making me trip in the process and get mud all over my new shoes and entire outfit. Still cool as a cucumber, he takes Lisa and proceeds to point out every crack or bump in the sidewalk as we walk - for the entire summer.

Sometimes I truly am a force of wreckless nature.

But man, that just made me crack up for a good 30 minutes. I can't ever imagine being in someone else's shoes and watching me be myself. I hope it's as entertaining as it seems months later.

Sums it up...

So many nightmares, so little sleep...another day.

Who's FICA and why are they getting all my money?

For only the second time in my life, I filed my own tax return. Nothing makes me feel more like a genius, than doing this myself.

I'd be lying if I didn't say my head is pounding from the 9,000 questions I was asked by TurboTax.

But I DID IT.

Insomnia

I should be asleep, especially with the sleeping meds. Instead I got sucked into the HBO show, Togetherness. This episode totally hit home because it was about two friends helping their married couple get through one of them cheating. The two guys travel back to their hometown and run into people who never left. They did up a backyard to find a time capsule. In it they found a note to themselves with this awesome quote:

"For within a man there is light. And if he lets that light shine, he lights up the entire world. And if he doesn't, he lives in total darkness."

Just love it. This episode was so raw and perfect in regards to friendship.

You are a Badass

I apparently went through a self-help book buying stage in mid-2015, most of which I'm getting to now - hence my meditation. "You Are A Badass" was a recommendation. Halfway through, it is both hilarious and helpful.

The majority of all this self-helpfulness is so intuitive. You know exactly what to do...you're just not. Or you never really thought of things the way they're laid out.

But, I have to say the notions are really helpful as I take on the next adventure in life and manage my way through where I'm at, when it's not exactly where I want to be.

Besides anyone that gets published with a quote like "there's nothing as unstoppable as a freight train of fuck-yeah" deserves my time and attention.

I'm glad I know a badass or two. There's a small chance I may even be one myself.

Can't make up for lost time

Many things made me smile today. Some things were bittersweet. But all were in good spirits. Time can heal, but you can't recreate the past.

Was great to see the two closest gals I spent every day with in high school. One has never left, the other we have reconnected but nothing will ever make up for a very significant lost amount of time. Much love though...at least we can all get together, however infrequently.
