573 Down, 60 to Go

For those of you on the Facebook, you know that my training is now complete.  Final count: 573.11 miles, 790.8 hours, 51,131 calories and 226,319 steps. I'm mad that I came up short 6.99 miles because of the week I was sick, but hey, I guess it's not too bad.

It has been a crazy 6 months.  I'd like to thank all of you for checking in and the ongoing cheering.  I have to give special thanks and much love to The Boyfriend for his ongoing watching out for me, making sure I didn't go overboard (I mean really, when have I EVER gone overboard?) and always reminding me to eat, stay hydrated, etc.    I'm sure he was probably tired of hearing me rattle out my training schedule, desperately trying to fit in every single mile amongst all the other stuff I had to do.  And I'm really appreciative that he stuck by me for this.

Part of me is pretty nervous.  I hope I make it the whole way, sans injury or exhaustion.  Because the only thing I have in mind is to get to that finish line.

At the end of the day, it's been an amazing journey and quite an accomplishment.  It didn't bring the people I lost to this awful disease back, but I'm hoping they'll be watching from above this weekend.  And I'm grateful that there are a bunch of survivors among me that I get to help as well.

If you are in Philly and do want to cheer me on, here is the link with the details.  http://www.the3day.org/site/PageServer?pagename=PL_Spectator

And in the end, I'm still just G

This is my last week of training.  Thanks to my human calculator/world's most awesomest accountant, Nicole, I will have walked the equivalent from DC to Indianapolis when this week is over.  I feel strong, I'm ready to run... in fact, I have started to do so (shh… that's considered cheating, so don't tell the training police on me).

Beyond the training, every day continues to be an adventure for me.  Everything is new.  When I walk, I still think about a lot of things… most days, my eyes still well with tears.  Sometimes because I'm stressed and tired, sometimes because I can't believe I'm still going, a lot of times because I still think about my furry best friend and how much I miss her.

And the rest of the time, I smile.  I never understood when you see runners and they have that look of misery on their face.  I guess its concentration.  For me, I'm normally smiling and singing to whatever is on iPurple (sorry District residents, sometimes I'm a little too audible).

I even smile when I think of my sweet Lucky, especially when I'm outside.  When I see something new, I think about how she would react.  Or I remember different routes I've taken, like climbing the Longport Bridge in Ocean City – and how ridiculous it seemed to walk a bridge… and back.

It's hard to not feel like a different version of myself with so many changes afoot.  But, then I realize… I'm still me.  I got a potato stuck in a light socket trying to fix a broken bulb.  I tripped on the treadmill this morning.  I'm just as goofy as I always have been.  And I'm ok with that too.

For me these 60 miles next week, is now just a mere pit stop in the journey I've already taken.  I'm looking forward to it, but, it's not the end.  It seems like this will only be the beginning of something yet undefined to come.

Hope you all stick around to figure out what that will be!

Smooches,

G

A Special Day!

Not because I'm back from my fantastical family cruise. Its because, as I've said for nearly 18 years now...this is the day the heavens opened up and dropped upon us one of my most favorite people, the Schmeffster.

I hope you have a great birthday, Schmeffy! I miss you much.

Smooches all!

To Know G is to Love G

I have so much to say - and never enough time to say it. This week, is a more typical past G week than usual - sick a few days before my family cruise, get caught in the rain with no cabs in sight... spill coffee down my new shirt. Oh, and I basically robbed Starbucks because the guy behind the counter said the coffee was bad, gave me a free drink coupon with my java... and then gave me back my money for my sandwich because the microwave broke. Sigh.

But one new thing that keeps me going is that The Boyfriend manages to know and yet still love me. So, after having a rather rough few days (yea, did I mention that at one point I actually cried at the end of Marmaduke the movie because Marmaduke got lost and had to be water rescued?), it was awesome to receive an email saying that I would need this for my walk:

If the Skirt Fits, Wear It!

I've been walking my butt off... literally. For two reasons 1) I decided to take on this walking challenge and 2) my doctor warned me that I needed to get myself healthy.

Healthy was really my primary objective, but there are some nice benefits. Six years and about six months ago, I wrote about a skirt that I bought while I was unemployed. It was really one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen in a store. I LOVED this skirt... which is judged by the fact that I spent $120 on it at a time when I was unemployed. And, I really don't buy expensive clothes to begin with...

I wore that skirt maybe once. Then it no longer fit. But, I couldn't part with it.

Today, for the first time in all of that time, I am wearing that skirt. I am not stuffed into that skirt, in fact, it fits perfectly.

So, I will be vain for one brief moment and tell you how awesome it feels to have acheived this.

Most of you know, I'm rarely proud of myself. I have moments where I'm proud of my work... but of myself, not so much. I'm really proud of myself for finally getting myself healthy.

And for being a pack rat and never ditching this gorgeous skirt.

Why Today Matters...

If we need a day like this to remember to be thankful and grateful, then maybe we missed the point of what 9/11 gave us in the first place. Don't wait for a day to remember to express your love for life, your friends and your family. Do it every day because we just don't know when our last chance to do that truly is.

I may not get to see you all, but there hasn't been one day in 10 years that I don't remain grateful for having every one of you in my life.

I will always remember to be especially grateful for Jeff, who not only came to rescue me, but when I wanted to give up amidst that bomb scare - carried my butt to get us to safety.

And of course to Melissa, for being by my side. Wasn't the best day for us to have to learn to be grownups...but I'm glad we did it together.

Smooches to all...

Fitness "Freak"

Have I mentioned I've been walking the past 6 months? Yea, I guess I have. I know some of you are wondering where the heck my time is going as I've been MIA... well, I've been walking so much, that even my company noticed. They wrote me up in the company health e-letter for my fitness/well-being achievements. Here's my interview below... enjoy it. I don't know how the Forrest Gump of Walking turns into a company example... and really who the heck thought I'd ever be an example for good health (unless they discovered booze cured cancer!)

Oh, and, all the walking/training is 6 days a week and my longest mileage per day is up to 17 miles. And that's led to me being 50 pounds or so lighter. So, I guess its paying off.

smooches,
g

How did you discover the fitness freak in you?
Haha. Hahahah. I think this is for the wrong gal, as I'm just starting out here. I was motivated to want to accomplish a real fitness goal – like people who do marathons. I've never been a runner or was involved in team sports. So, I figured if I was going to walk I should do it for a good cause, which is why I'm doing the Susan G. Komen 3-Day 60 mile walk for breast cancer.

I heard a rumour that you walk to work quite a bit. Is this true?
I walk to work when I can (weather/schedule permitting). It helps fit in some of the mileage I need to walk each week. It's also a great way to distress from a long day and avoid the Metro which usually a nightmare.

What is the most extremely athletic thing you have ever done?
When I do this 60 mile walk in October - that will be it.

If you were stranded on a desert island and could only bring one piece of sporting equipment with you, what would it be?
A kayak.

What is the most important lesson your life has taught you so far?
Laughter is the best medicine.

What sort of advice would you give to people who say: 'I don't have time to exercise'?
I would say they're right… which is why you have to use your superpowers and make time appear. It's tough, but it happens.

Naturally Disasterous

I was nicely told I needed to post again. By that I mean Dee told me "I bet all your recent brushes with natural disasters would make for a great blog entry." This is code for "entertain me, dagnabit."

So, I'll oblige.

There's so much going on - I really didn't need a friggin earthquake AND hurricane in the same week.

But, let's start with the quake. I'm not even going to sugarcoat this - I was scared as f*ck. My building was designed post 9/11, so it's designed to sway. If a thunderstorm happens, you see the windows give... if a large truck passes, you feel a little rumble. I work on the 8th floor. So, I'm going about my day when we feel a rumble, see no truck, then we feel a full on shake and the building sways from side to side - as if I was on a boat. I hear someone yell "everyone get the hell out" and I'm off.

Now, mock me if you will, but, post 9/11, I've always kept two things: 1) comfortable shoes and 2) a purse full of so much random stuff I would hands down win any episode of Let's Make a Deal. Because of my training, I carry a backpack most days, but that day I had conveniently spread everything out all over. I tried to swoop everything up but when it was too much, ditched the bag, clutched the bberry and my purse and ran the hell out.

By the time I reached the ground, I had a full on panic attack. Literally. I grasped for some Xanax and popped one w/o water. My first instinct inside was to look for the plane that hit, outside w/o a plane in sight, I heard someone say "maybe it was a bomb in the Metro" (my building is on a major line.

It was terrifying. I tried to work, but couldn't function, so I left for home.

The one thing that I was struck by was everyone checking in and sending their love. THANK YOU for that. It always overwhelms me.

On the heels of that, however, comes Irene. Now, my circuits are already overloaded. So, hearing that a giant ass hurricane is coming... well, I was ready to just go into hiding.

The Boyfriend, on the other hand, is always prepared. He spent days preparing - checking flashlights, radios, going to the grocery store... making sure we were in the best place. What did I do? I got highlights and was mildly alarmed I couldn't get a pedicure. No really. I was so out of sorts, I had nothing left to give.

Fortunately for us, it amounted to a rainy day that was a good excuse to couch surf. I know others weren't as lucky.

All of this fun kicks off the series of craziness I'm about to go through.

We head to the Outerbanks (I swear there are some left!). Then, the real fun begins. Crazy work, crazy home life... but I'm not going further into detail.

For now...

G

Selling G

One thing that continues to amaze me about The Boyfriend is his ability to get the little things.  For example, purchasing and keeping a shiny, light up ball in the car to amuse me on car trips... or a light up bubble gun for my birthday.  Now, I'm quickly learning that he's figured out some of the secrets of G and are using them to influence our purchasing decisions.

The Cat's Diary

Day 983 of My Captivity

My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects. They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while the other inmates and I are fed hash or some sort of dry nuggets. Although I make my contempt for the rations perfectly clear, I nevertheless must eat something in order to keep up my strength.
The only thing that keeps me going is my dream of escape. In an attempt to disgust them, I once again vomit on the carpet. Today I decapitated a mouse and dropped its headless body at their feet. I had hoped this would strike fear into their hearts, since it clearly demonstrates my capabilities. However, they merely made condescending comments about what a "good little hunter" I am. Bastards!
There was some sort of assembly of their accomplices tonight. I was placed in solitary confinement for the duration of the event. However, I could hear the noises and smell the food. I overheard that my confinement was due to the power of "allergies." I must learn what this means, and how to use it to my advantage.
Today I was almost successful in an attempt to assassinat e one of my tormentors by weaving around his feet as he was walking. I must try this again tomorrow, but at the top of the stairs.
I am convinced that the other prisoners here are flunkies and snitches. The dog receives special privileges. He is regularly released, and seems to be more than willing to return. He is obviously retarded. The bird must be an informant. I observe him communicate with the guards regularly. I am certain that he reports my every move. My captors have arranged protective custody for him in an elevated cell, so he is safe. For now ...

Love is never asking people to edit themselves

Great article, which everyone should read... even though it's geared toward companies... it really applies to people... i love this part:

Love is never asking people to edit themselves
Several years ago, I conducted a workshop with the identity company, Brains on Fire. Since then, I have yet to come across another company that more epitomizes love. As their founder Robbin Phillips suggests, "Be famous for the people who love you and for the way you love them." In my experience, the best way to love people is to let them express themselves. Without restriction. Without resorting to code. And without having to look over their shoulder. After all, nothing disengages people quicker than interfering with the expression of their individuality. Leave people liberated. Let them live their brand and stay loyal to themselves. Create a safe place where individual creativity can shine. Petition people to inject their personality into everything they do. What kind of love will you become famous for?
----

7 Things You Never Have to Do

"Love is never having to say you're sorry."

This phrase originated in the movie Love Story, but has since been modified, satirized, patronized and reorganized through dozens of movies, songs, television shows and other popular art forms.

And that got me thinking: I wonder if there are other things we never have to do? In business, in life and in love, maybe there's an entire line of thinking based on this idea.

I've developed a list of seven examples.

1. Generosity is never having to keep score

I recently dropped my laptop. Right on the asphalt. Completely dented the corner of the screen. But when I took it into the Apple store, they were unexpectedly generous. First, the guy at the Genius Bar told me he once dropped his laptop too, but down an escalator. Second, he agreed to send my computer to the repair center that day. Third, he let me back up my data in the store before I went home. Fourth, they returned my computer to me two days faster than they promised. And fifth, they didn't charge me a dime. No questions asked. I was speechless. Just when I thought Apple was all style and no service, they delivered. Just when I thought Apple was all hype and no help, they delivered. That's the thing about generosity: It's not corporate scoreboard. It's not something you can choreograph. You just dance in the moment and respond to the now need. How are you giving yourself away?

2. Class is never having to apologize for transparency

The company 37Signals uses a company blog to foster a direct conversation between developers and customers. Not to shamelessly promote the website, but to solicit feedback on their user interface. That's class. Not to bother people into buying from them, but to keep customers abreast on programming changes in real time. That's class. And not to hawk the new software programs, but to explain the motivation behind the changes to their existing ones. That's class. They also give virtual tours of their design process, display screen shots of the revised versions of new layouts, and even host streaming question-and-answer sessions between users and the founder of the company. That's class. No wonder their users are so fanatical about the company. How much loyalty are you losing by being opaque?

3. Commitment is never having to discipline yourself

At a recent art fair, I had the chance to meet one of my favorite cartoonists: Paul Palnik. I shook his hand. I thanked him for his work. And I told him never to stop making art. His response was perfect, "I have no choice; it's who I am." Think Palnik has to discipline himself to draw every day? Not a chance. Because he's committed. And that's exactly what happens when you decide to play for keeps: Commitment deletes distraction. No matter how slammed you are, there's always time for the non-negotiables. No matter how overextended you become, you still create space to execute what matters. What if you made a list of a hundred reasons why you do what you do and kept it in your wallet?

4. Freedom is never having to bury your desire

I once worked for a client who blocked Internet use at their office. From everybody. And the saddest part was, they were a sales organization. And their 200 employees— most of whom were under the age of thirty—had no online access. Which I certainly understand from the perspective of productivity and security. Nobody wants their employees wasting time when they should be making sales. But these people are cold calling all day. Without online access, they can't Google their customers, conduct research on their competitors or leverage social media as a listening platform. If you want your people engage at work, don't let the feeling of formality keep them from communicating freely. Is your office a prison or a playground?

5. Confidence is never having to say you're cool

If you have to tell people you are, you probably aren't. And if you have to tell people you aren't, you probably are. That's what I don't understand about social media: People are so insecure about their own value that they need to embed a graphic that points to the button that asks strangers to like them. I'm sorry, but popularity is not a substitute for truth. If you have to interrupt me with an e-mail that asks me to like you, we're done. On the other hand, if you're awesome, people will know it. Being amazing never goes out of style. Are you spending money trying to make people like you, or investing emotional labor trying to make the world better?

7. Creativity is never having to grow up

Instead, it's about growing younger. It's about "escaping adulthood," according to artists Kim and Jason Kotecki. Reengage your playful spirit. It's attractive, it's relaxing and it's more enjoyable to be around. Besides, there's nothing that can't be taken lighter. Even the serious issues. Second, build a reservoir of positivity. Say "yes" as often as possible. Especially when it would be easier, cheaper and more convenient to say "no." That's where creativity lives. And lastly, build enthusiasm into small moments. Your energy is your greatest asset. Speak with passion or risk being unheard. Just make sure your energy is supported with truthfulness. Otherwise you're just passionately incompetent. How creative do people remember you as?

shallow achievements of the day

I went all day in white and am not stained like a dalmatian and new shoes were awaiting my arrival at home! Shiny ones too!

Sent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerry

You need a new blog post, STAT.

"Just sayin".

I love and miss you too, my peeps. Where have I been? Did I get sucked into the GBAS abyss?

Nah. I'm good. Very good. Been spending my summer training for my walk. When I'm not walking, I'm pooling. I look like I'm a different race with this tan. And I've purposely put in extra training during the week so I can swim and chill on the weekends.

GBAS was pretty good - minus the microburst in OC that literally tore one of the doors off the hinges. Chilled with the Boyfriend and my pop playing a game called Fact or Crap - turns out both of them are full of it. :-)

I miss my friends. Everything continues to whiz by. I'm stuck with the dilemma of how to squeeze so many good or fun things into a week. Down time is definitely a thing of the past.

I'm enjoying all of it - but its just so strange how my life has changed so much... And, I have to say, I totally dig the Boyfriend's family. Very cool peeps, with just my type of sarcastic creative humor. (Read: dirty).

His brother and I have had at least two giggle fits on the couch. And overall, its so truly welcoming and fun to be around them. Hoping for more to come.

I still miss you all though. Schedules have been craptastic. And I'm really hoping that it won't take until Christmas to see you. But seeing as I have 2 open weeks from now until after my Oct 16 walk...crikey, I'm a girl on the move.

But loving every minute of this roller coaster.

Determined.

There will be no GBAS this year.  Despite having my typical GBAS beginning to this b-day season.  I am cancelling GBAS.  I'm going to have a good birthday, because there is no reason why I shouldn't.

So suck it, Universe.  You can keep trying, but I ain't buying what you're selling.

Storytime...

At least I'm good for something... G-injury stories told far and wide...

Schmeffy: oh...story time. What was the reason you got fired from the telemarketer?

G: Ha.
well, i didn't get fired
i never went back
i got written up for not doing 2 rebuttals to a blind person for a GM mastercard
despite me explaining to my manager that the person was BLIND and therefore couldn't DRIVE
this was also a day after i fell down the stairs and broke my foot there
and was written up for taking a 17 min break instead of a 15
b/c i couldn't walk the 8 floors w/the broken foot
and the elevator got stuck
why do you ask?

Schmeffy: just having a discussion about bad telemarketing jobs

G: haha and you think of me.

Schmeffy: yes!

Weaknesses

Asking for help has never been my thing. I'm also not so good at being in the spotlight... I get ultra shy - which I'm sure most of you are thinking can't be possible, but I assure you it is true.

That's why the fundraising was a good exercise for me. I can ask for just about anything for anyone else - heck, its my job. But if its me, I clam up.

So, you can imagine my surprise that I reached my goal. Now imagine walking into my job and hearing that my coworkers put together an entire building-wide bake sale to help me raise my money as a surprise. And looking at an overflowing table of food that people contributed too, designed signs, you name it.

Last week, during one of my 5 mile walks I heard someone screaming my name. It was my office's security guard, who left her post to cheer me on...she saw me pass her on my first leg of the trek and ran out as I was walking back. I was hot and tired, but after that small "hey - you go, Miss Gina!!" I floated the remaining 2.5 miles.

I'm overwhelmed by the kindness people can show when we step outisde our boxes. I know I have the type of friends and family who have taught me how to be kind, caring and compassionate. They do so all the time - whether its a "hey I miss you" email or taking time to help someone recover from a painful procedure.

It takes so little to make someone's day....and I fully intend to continue to pay it forward.

Smooches,
G

Grateful

I have a bunch of reasons to be grateful and feel accomplished as we are about 1/2 way through this year.

I completed my Mental Health First Aid class.

I hit my fundraising goal yesterday, thanks to the kindness of family, friends and some strangers.

I'm managing to keep on track with my training, despite the summer getting more chaotic. Gotta love surprise client dinners.

I have even managed to lose at least 32 pounds since about March.

But, I'm most grateful for my boyfriend who loves me despite all this...and even endures my craziness, which I hope you all continue to explain is part of my charm.

Anyone that can not only put up with me, but still manage to show up - and with flowers and a smile nonetheless, has to be a good dude.

And I do love a good dude.

Miss y'all...

Smooches,
G

Taking a Stroll

So, I've been walking. A lot. Over 115 miles to date. I walk past all the monuments erected for all the great people who have made this country what it is. I watch people...I get to see families explore this city. I watch happy dogs whose owners are taking them for their evening strolls. Man, does that make me miss Lucky. Especially when I see dogs who say hello to me.

I've watched birds enjoying puddles and taking bird baths. Ducks and ducklings figuring out how to make their way in the world.

I've had to listen to at least half of the 3,000+ songs in iPurple. I have so much time to think. Maybe too much time.

So you'd think by now I'd be covered in G-injuries - bruises, shin splints, broken shoulders.

I must admit, I was feeling pretty proud - that is until the giant gash on my left leg and gross scab on my right showed up.

Was it from a killer 7 mile trek? If it was - wouldn't that make me cool?

No, it was from me tripping and falling like the graceful bull I am at the Phish show.

After a lovely visit to the Howard County EMT folks, all of which B photographed and posted on Facebook, I was all fixed up. And we were able to dance. And dance. And dance some more.

I can't remember the last time I danced for that long or enjoyed a concert that much. I actually felt like I was a kid again.

Pretty awesome stuff.

Much, much more to tell...but, never anytime to write it.

I miss you all.

Mama I'm (be)Coming Home(sick)

I miss my Jersey. I miss my peeps in Jersey. I love my peeps here - boyfriend included. But, as we sat and ate some actually decent Italian food (imported from Staten Island), I remembered how much I missed home.

Love you guys. Trying to figure out some time to make it home.

My life as a dog

I've always wanted to be a dog. In fact, if I could be a dog, I'd want to be a golden retriever. Happy go lucky, admittedly goofy - yet pretty enough to pull that off.

Yet, I realize that try as I might, I am a chihuahua. And not even a cool Yo Quiero Taco Bell pup or like my friend's sweetie named Lucy.

I am the typical, hyper anxiety chihuahua. One who was apparently over ambitious earlier this year and attempted to take on way too many "do well by doing good" goals which is why I'm currently a ghost to most of you.

For example, last night after working until 7:45, I trained for my upcoming 60 mile walk in the 90+ degree heat by walked 4.5 miles and eating dinner at 9:15 pm. I was up again at 6 am to do laundry and cross-train, so I could make my 6-9 pm Mental Health First Aid class tonight.

And after today's 16+ hour day, I will follow with a 6 mile walk tomorrow night so I can keep up with all the weekend stuff and not hold us back.
At least I went to DisneyWorld and the Boyfriend did NOT lose me...which to me signals he may actually love me. (We did have a great time - hopefully pictures to come).

I am also homesick after the holiday weekend. Even though I'm responsible for bad weather during Memorial Day, I do miss my Jersey Shore. But, I could def get used to having a pool - especially since I can see and swim! It rocks!!

I miss and love you all.

G

The “C” Word

As you’ve seen on TV, you don’t want to anger a Jersey girl. I may not have the accent, but I do possess the anger of any Real Housewive or Jerseylicious gal. And after losing 2 family members in the past 5 weeks, I’ve got a number one thing on my list. The “C” Word.

That’s right, cancer, I’m pissed off. You infected one of my closest friend’s sisters – both of them in a matter of months. You took my aunt. And this week, you took my beloved best furry friend… my own dog.

And now I’m coming for you.

I’ll be the first to admit, when I set out to walk 60 miles in 3 days, I really didn’t think I had a strong personal link to this issue, at least not as strong as my fellow teammates who lost their grandmother to breast cancer.

I lost my grandmother too, she also had the “c” word – but survived that battle, unfortunately not the war. I have other relatives too, who are alive to tell the tale.

But the more I think about cancer, the angrier I get. And the angrier I get, the further I find myself walking.

I’d be foolish to not think you’re eyeing me up – given my family history and statistically speaking. And I’m telling you right now, I’m staring you down and I plan to fight you. You’ve picked on my friends and my family enough. It’s your turn to go down.

And one step at a time, I will bring you there. Because one way or another, I’m going to get my donations necessary to walk. Ask anyone I know, I’m the most stubborn girl you’ll ever meet. So, I’m going to walk all 580 miles for my 6 months of training… then in October I’m going to walk those 60 miles in 3 days with two of my best girls by my side. And if you think I’m tough, well, you haven’t met these gals. And frankly, they’ve got a bone to pick with you too.

I’d suggest you run and hide, “c” word. Because you’re on my bad side and it’s not a place anyone wants to be.

For those of you reading, please help me get there: http://tinyurl.com/walkginawalk

My sweet Lucky

Always the angel, she passed away with us holding her.

She was the best. I will miss our walks, playing ball in the tennis courts. Its amazing what a dog teaches you about life, when you think you're teaching a dog.

Lucky taught me how to slow down...sniff (or smell) the flowers. Really look around at life - and just take a minute.

She showed me its ok to be the goofball that you are and its important to play.

And she never judged a book by its cover - she was sweet to everyone. I don't think there was a single person that didn't melt and smile when she'd look at them. In fact, she also used to just wander up to people's houses, especially down the shore. Noone ever gave it a second thought to let her stand there and say hello.

Dogs are amazing creatures. They are what most of us hope to be - happy and a best friend. I will always miss my furry best friend.

Help

if there was ever a time for love and prayers, it would be now. Please send me what you can spare friends.
Lucky will not be recovering - she has lymphoma and a mass on her spine that will make her unable to walk again. My sister and I will be saying goodbye tomorrow.

She was and is my reason to be a better person. I hope to be 1/2 as lovable and happy as she has always been.

I will miss her so much...my sweet Lucky.

Please send good vibes

For Lucky the Wonderdog...she's currently hospitalized in Red Bank. Not really sure what's wrong, but she's having trouble walking.

For those of you who know my unnatural love for dogs, you can appreciate how distressing it is. :-(

And for those of you who know Lucky - you know that she's just the sweetest, most lovable dog. She's always there for me - I wish I could be returning the favor.

Ah, Normalcy

It's a crazy time I'm living in - the Boyfriend survived his first Griswold holiday...work remains constant chaos. So, its good that somethings never change.

Take this conversation with my mother...after she insists my dad stop talking to me regarding my future.

G: Mom, what's up?
Mom: I'm in the shampoo aisle, what shampoo do I need to buy for your father?
G: what? Ummmm. TresSemme? Pantene?
Mom: are you sure - what does his hair need?
G: don't most mothers call to say they love and miss their kids?
Mom: ok, Pantene. Now what did you want?
G: um, nothing because the Metro is coming...I'll call you back in 10 minutes.
Mom: well, we won't be answering because we're off to the mall.
G: thank you for your honesty.
Mom: you're welcome...love you byeeeee.

Yep, family still the same.

Miss y'all.

Blue October - Inner Glow

I'm like a storm cloud eager when you go out
Calm again
I'll ask permission for the wrong to win
Drop the bomb and get your story out and get it on
In a haze the beginning of your days
Gonna fall down
Got to get back up but at your own pace
Got to fill your cup and find the way
Out of your own maze
Yeah boy what you said now

And hide the rule book throw it in the waste
Look strong
Like you belong cause you do belong
Whether right or wrong you belong

I'm on your side if you fail at least you tried
To keep your aching celebrating wonder making heart alive
Yeah and pride don't keep it all inside
Don't keep your aching celebrating wonder making heart alone
Write you own song

Whatever happened to our inner glow
Whatever happened to the song the soul the me i used to know
Whatever happened to my radio
Whatever happened to my song
It is my song

So here's a preview shove it under old-new
Or call it rock or pop or bach or f**k
Goddamn where did we go wrong
Now there's a category for every song

Yeah we only want to sing when we want to
Yeah we only want a dream we can flaunt to
Yeah we only want to fly by the side making love to the rhythm be a Jekyll and a Hyde
Yeah we only want a field we can run through
Yeah we only want a beat we can drum to
Yeah we only want to fly by the side making love to the rhythm be a Jekyll and a Hyde

So stride if you fail at least you tried
To keep your aching celebrating wonder making heart alive
And pride don't keep it all inside
Don't keep your aching celebrating wonder making heart alone
Write your own song

Whatever happened to our inner glow
Whatever happened to the song the soul the me i used to know
Whatever happened to my radio
Whatever happened to the song

Gonna wake up strong ya we're all gonna wake up strong...

April Showers

I dislike April because almost everyone I've known passes away in April. I lost my aunt on Friday. She was my godmother. She's the "Marie" from "GinaMarie", which for those of you who don't know, is my real first name.

My aunt was a pint-sized powerhouse at around 5 feet tall...directly opposite of her 6' 5" husband. She was a calm, quiet force which was always the perfect counterbalance to my energetic and exuberant uncle. A nurse by trade, she was among the most caring people I've ever met.

She never wanted people to make a fuss about her.  She always let the spotlight shine down those around her.

One of the best attributes I learned from her was how to be a calm, quiet force. It is a discipline she perfected throughout her life, and one I can only hope to emulate someday.

She proved that even today when a major storm hit as we were driving to her grave site. We were unable to bury her, which in turn, spared her grandkids the pain of watching her go into the ground. You'd be hard pressed to convince me that she didn't make that a request of hers.

For years, I've always wondered why my parents would give me two first names, especially when paired with a 12 letter last name.

I realize that it went beyond their quirky humor to see how many letters I could learn at a young age, and beyond just giving me the name of my godmother.

I think my parents maybe thought I'd need something to balance me out. And I think that by naming me GinaMarie, they knew that it would be the perfect blend of the boisterous Gina and the calm that is and will always be my Aunt Marie.

Everyone who passes, goes too soon. This is why I'm such a stickler for trying to appreciate the limited time I have with people. And why, I care more about having time with people then anything else I ever receive. Spending time with the people you love is the most valuable gift you can receive in life.

I think we all forget that sometimes, but its something we should strive to actively remember. You never know when that gift will be gone...but you do realize, sometimes too late, that when it is gone it is all you ever ultimately wanted.

We all have limited time. But nothing will ever be more important than taking the time to say I love you.

As the priest said today, "Saying I love you is the way we say that you will live eternally as I carry you as part of my heart."

I can say with certainty that I love all of you and nothing makes my heart feel stronger than carrying you all, whether you are here or beyond, in my heart.

G

Extraordinary People

Everyone is a superhero. You've heard me say that before. And here's more proof. The sister of one of my bestest girls was recently diagnosed with cancer. When I was told by my friend, I looked at her like she had 3 heads, because this girl is the picture of health and has a beautiful family. Yet this sweet, young girl was hit with this awful disease. It seems impossible. Does she give in and cower? No, like so many of the people around me… she stands and she fights. She wins, thank god… and now instead of moving on with her already busy life of being a mother of 2 beautiful kids but goes on to build awareness of something that can protect us all.

Please give a read to her story below. Spread the word to your loved ones too. And my heartfelt love to her for being so courageous on this mission.

I am a 31 year old, otherwise healthy female who was just diagnosed with Papillary Thyroid Cancer. I recently underwent a Total Thyroidectomy and am now on lifelong medication to replace my thyroid function. The small cancerous nodule was only discovered after my primary care physician ordered a precautionary ultrasound after I complained of throat discomfort. There is no history of cancer in my family, nor have I had exposure to an abnormal amount of radiation that I know of. However, since then, I've done some research and heard the opinion of some doctors and have found something very alarming. There has been a large increase in Thyroid Cancers, especially in women, and many doctors are contributing this rise to the failure to protect the thyroid from harmful radiation during routine dental x-rays and mammograms. I have found that many dentists have a special "thyroid guard" to use during x-rays but ONLY use it if the patient requests it! Otherwise, the neck area is left exposed to harmful radiation. One patient told me that when she requested the thyroid guard be used during dental x-rays, the technician was "surprised" and "impressed" that she asked for it and said it is only used at the request of a patient. WHY is the use of this guard not mandatory? Please consider addressing this issue on your Health Check segment. We need everyone to request the use of this guard, and make people more aware of this cancer and how it can be avoided.

Who are you again?

I used to have a pretty good sense of where I fit into my family structure... on a good day, it was somewhere behind Lucky the Wonderdog.  When my nieces came along, I think I bumped a little lower.   I'm officially one rung further down on the ladder.  Why?

My parents are in Vegas this week... I'm hoping to win me lots of money so I can retire.  I'd even consider being their nanny.  Yet, this is the text message I get from my Dad:   "Hi, Mom wants to know about the WS of Poker Mike is interested in.  Is it a game we can get in LV?"

(No, I also don't know how my dad doesn't know what World Series of Poker is... especially since he's usually more knowledgeable than me in just about everything.)

so, i responded that if they win $1,000 they could spot him to play in it... (we'll forgo the fact that I am not so bad at the cards, also).

Response:
Dad: "If we win big, he's in"
Me: what do i get?
Dad: you can watch him.

I hope I at least get an invite to Christmas this year... if not, look out Doyles, I'm crashing.

Smooches,
G

Another thing that needs a name...

The day has come.  I'm going to the Apple store.  My computer done died and the boyfriend is converting me to a Mac.  It's sorta like the Twilight series... but, ya know, just with a computer.  Take that R-Patz and K-Stew.  Oh and my 72-yr old Dad who has cooler technology then me!!  :-)

Happy Birthday Scotty!!

Ah yes, it is time for the annual Scoot birthday post.  Usually this time I'm loaded with life survival tips including How to Survive a Blackout in Vegas, The Ins and Outs to Dating Life and When It's Ok to Eat Pasta You Find When You Awake from a Drunken Stupor on Your Couch.

Yet, sadly, Scoot, I'm afraid I have matured and no longer have those fun tales to tell.  Instead, I'll have to go back to the roots of our friendship and reconnect with you on a level that you and I have perfected over the last 17 years.

Figured it out yet?  That's right, making fun of the Schmeffster.

For those of you that don't know, Scoot and I have devoted half of our lives to the fine art of laughing at Schmeff.  Schmeffster still refuses to acknowledge just how funny he is and the joy it brings to me and Scoot to laugh endlessly at his uniqueness.  Well, Scotty, in honor of your birthday, I managed to dig up the below conversations – between you and me – and also between me and the Schmeffster.

I hope you laugh as hard as I did.

Happy birthday to you!  You know I love you mister.

Smooches,

G

PS – this could be the last of Schmeffster coverage.  After 7 years of blogging about him, he has asked me to stop.  I'm sure you all can convince him otherwise.  We LOVE you Schmeffster!

(Scene: Scotty signs on IM after G has an extensive conversation with Schmeffster)

G (to Scotty): Schmeff is disappointed that I can't find something about him that makes him OCD.  I told him he was paranoid schizophrenic w/a side order of hypochondria... and he's very upset that he doesn't have obsessive compulsive disorder.  Really?

(G sends below conversation to show Scoot)

Schmeffy: We were talking at lunch yesterday about OCD.  There are some people in my office that have some major issues for what its worth...but anyway, I couldn't put my finger on any unique OCD habits I have.  Then I asked my wife, and she couldn't figure any either.  I said, 'G must know'.

G: You... OCD? Nah, you're more paranoid schizophrenic

Schmeffy: Huh?

G: With a side order of hypochondria…definitely hypochondriac and paranoid, but I can't think of anything that you do that's OCD.

Schmeffy: Hmph

G: Do you want OCD?

Schmeffy: No, just figured that I had some ticks...just couldn't think of them.

G: hmmm... Nah... I don't think so.

Schmeffy: K

Scotty: HMM. How about the time he tried to make all of the Nissan symbols on his car rims face the same way?

G: Oooh!  That's a great one!  I can't win.  Tell the kid he has a mis-shapened head and he gets all upset... tell the kid he doesn't have mental health issues, and he's disappointed.

(G back to Schmeffy)

G: I'm double checking.  I stand corrected…you have OCD issues with cars.  How about the time he tried to make all of the Nissan symbols on his car rims face the same way?

Schmeffy: Who said that?

G: I'll give you three guesses and it should only take one.  Who else would have the same wealth of Schmeffy knowledge?

Schmeffy: Forget it...

The Show Goes On...

I've had a couple hours to sleep. So, other than being beyond exhausted, this project was one of the cooler things I've worked on. You'll see me around 30 seconds in... immortalized on YouTube as a big ol' blur... I'm thanking goodness that's its a work related reason to be found on YouTube.

Seriously though, putting this production together in Union Station was a crazy ordeal, but you know me... and me with people... hearing people's stories about family members they've lost to diabetes or taking pictures to send to their families as reminders why they keep asking them to get help or get tested... I was all overcome with emotion. This was a good thing for a 13 hour day, 12 hours of which I was on my feet talking to people.

Enjoy, please share on FB, so word gets out.

Why My Dad is Cooler than Me... reason #4,296

My father will be 72 this year... and he is cooler than me.  First, he became a Mac, while I'm a lowly PC.  Then, he got an iTouch... and is well versed in his apps (the Garage Sale one is just my parents' favorite fascination).  Now, my father called me the other night because he has switched from his Blackberry Torch to a Droid.

The upside is that I will no longer need damnyouautocorrect.com b/c my dad's new voice-to-text feature is all the humor i need.  Case in point:

G: go to facebook and show mom pics that the boyfriend took
Dad: Hi gina pictures look great mom would like god kapisa if possible on are you get off from facebook let me know okay but my shots bye
G: is "god kapisa" good copies?
Dad: you got it.

The good news is that I may finally be on my parent's mantle, if my boyfriend gives them a picture.  Of course, it won't be a picture of just me... because there still isn't a single picture of me up there... but hey, I'll take it.

Smooches,
G

Now That's a Good Day

Today, I managed to get two tickets to see Phish, which I haven't seen in years. Psyched because I've got shut out a few years for these tix!

But that's not all folks! I'm going to Disneyworld!! Really! Me and the Boyfriend have been trying to think of a vacation - and finally decided upon Orlando.

Hoping he doesn't lose me - unlike my family. Also hoping he will continue to appreciate my G-ness, as me trying to contain myself in Disneyworld would cause spontaneous combustion.

So, yea, that's a pretty damn good day. Much needed after a long week.

The G Book of World Records...

When I was in Aruba, B said "if anyone should have given up hope (when it comes to meeting someone), it was you. But you didn't, you just kept on going."  As is the general nature of our discussions, we were, of course, laughing hysterically during this conversation as we recounted the numerous poor attempts at dating.  From the funnier stories of the light weight to the time B dressed me like a lesbian sailor and kissed me in front of my date... there really are some classic stories to be told.  Some truly sad stories too, but, that's just the nature of life.

I've told most of you throughout the last zillion years that when I met the right guy, that I would kick him in the shin for making me wait for so long.  If I didn't think it would've made a bad impression, I would've kicked someone nearly two years ago... soon after he kissed my hand saying good night on our first date.  as he would say, "your aim is pretty bad and you'd probably kick an innocent stranger."

Obviously, we didn't stay together for two years, otherwise this would be a different story... and let's face it, not a very G-riffic story at that.  Because when do I ever get anything right the first time?

Yet, now 6 months later, I'm happy to say that that same boy and I are very much together.  I may (or may not) admit that I get a little giddy when I know I'm going to see him.  We've shared a laugh or two thousand.  And, apparently, I'm still glowing.  I'd love to blame some radioactive DC water, but I'm afraid that isn't the case.

It would seem I may be on to something here.  I'd be lying if I told you that every day is sunshine and roses... and all of you know how much work goes into relationships.  But there is something to be said for when something feels quite right.  When that person who you've really only known for a very short time in comparison to everyone else, seems like they've always been a part of your world.  Blends right in with family and friends... yet, is still so unique and special.

He's a smart cookie - but don't tell him I told you that.  He's well adept at reading me.  And he's also pretty good at surprising me, always when I'm least expecting it.  He'll tell me that he does some stuff "because that's what boyfriends are supposed to do".  I sorta nod, but mostly because I don't have the heart to break it to him that he's wrong.  It's not what boyfriends do.  It's what he does - and its what separates him from everyone else.

Yes, I know you are thinking that I didn't have anywhere to go but up.  But, I don't think any of us (self included) was expecting me to reach the top of the pile.

I'd like to tell you I got lucky... but, as I've been told so many times, when the timing is right it will happen.  And when I win, I win big.

And so it goes...

Sappyness and smooches,
G

Dear Anonymous

To answer your question, technically no, I haven't been on the wagon. But, by my former standards, I'm driving the wagon. Last night, I topped off at 2 1/2 glasses of wine. So, if anyone had any big plans to enter me into any drinking competitions, I'd hold off.

I'm sorta rocking a health kick. No, this isn't like the time I tried to stay sober for 45 days... Although, probably wouldn't be that hard. I've quit most of my bad habits. Maybe a glass of wine at night. I now eat 1800 calories a day, instead of shots of 1800 Cuervo. I'm down to 1 diet coke a day and work out 3-4 times a week. Soon to be more - as I go into the more hard core training for my 60 mile, 3 day walk. Also, I'm hoping to solve my insomnia with melatonin. I didn't realize how badly my lack of sleep has been hurting me.

Yea, maturity has kicked in, which is nice in some ways...sometimes it can be just as boring as I expected. But, as fun as the stories have been, it is nice to not be the story for awhile. And to try new challenges, unlike defeating the newest pool contender. As Mr. M Mixologist would say "a happily partnered homebody"...hence why my friend came over to hang out instead of heading to the bar.

Not that I'm not me, just a tweaked, more settled version.

I wouldn't throw away those boas and beads just yet, folks...I'm sure there will be a reprise. ;-)

Beyond getting to see some of you... and greatly missing others, I thought you'd all appreciate this:

Gina: I can take it, I'm a ninja.
Boyfriend: Just because you can take 10 people down by attempting to walk down a flight of stairs, doesn't make you a ninja.
Gina: grrr.

The V-Day Report

I almost killed my boyfriend. Yes, it was an accident. I swear! Turns out that not all chocolate is in pink wrapping because its for Valentines. In fact, if you're the confusing Ghiradelli folks its code for raspberry, to which he's badly allergic. Fortunately, being the slightly more detail oriented and literate man that he is, he read the ingredients, thus saving me from a repeat v-day in the ER.

One thing he's not allergic to are my chocolate chip cookies. Oh, and Yankees tickets. Definitely no allergic reaction from those.

Yes, kids, I survived a normal and pretty wonderful V-day. That even came with a delivery of roses to my office...and me blushing like a doofus.

There's a rumor that some of you may be meeting him this weekend. Before you go getting ideas, I'm perfectly aware of how introductory meetings have been...more an "initiation" aka "humiliation" of the introducer.

Not sure there is anything that could really embarrass me that I haven't thought to tell him, yet. But, if I did forget something, I'm more than sure he'll enjoy jumping right in on taunting me.

Blood letting

Despite my best efforts, my boyfriend has broke the code and figured out I'm not perfect.

So, it would be no shock that I've already taken a shark-bite chunk out of my leg today while shaving. Lost hair when I got my it caught in my sunglasses. Oh, and somehow I hit myself in the face with my deodorant.

At least I'm now Ph balanced and smell Shower Fresh?

Let's see if I can finally lose "bah humbug" from my least favorite day of the year.

I'm looking forward to spending the evening with someone that despite my many shortcomings, seems to be happy to spend his time with me. Hard not to love someone who's that good to me.

But if I could be omniscient (or just clone myself), there's many things I would also be doing today to show my love including:

-serenading Ms. Nicole with "Can't Smile Without You" using the 3 chords Mrs. Miece taught us on guitar
-sneaking Schmeffster a bag of Chips Ahoy
-sipping on some drinkypoos with my girls
-babysitting so you all could go out
-snuggling with my Lucky dog

Why I Miss Aruba...reason #5320

The head of my company was here today and asked how many hours I spent on the beach to get this tan.

I didn't have the heart to tell him I'm subsidizing with the Island of Jergens Daily Glow. But, I think he may think I'm overpaid now. :-)

I also miss all of you!!!

Hola from Aruba

Hello my friends (hola mi amigos y amigas),

I'm hoping the Verizon lady didn't lie and that I have email access. If not, I will be working for Verizon to pay off the charges.

I am having a lovely time here in Aruba, despite some rain. Some lessons learned:

1) I'm rather sure I was switched at birth and was destined to live on an island. I love the water, the beach... Sigh.

2) I am boning up on my espanol, even though it is not the native language. B and I find ourselves mostly around South Americans. Arubians speak some mix of dutch and spanish. Fortunately, I know the international language of alcohol, so no major translation issues. Actually, I find myself saying everything twice in english and spanish...

3) La piscina is solamente para adultos. Don't go to an all inclusive unless its adults only. Don't get me wrong, y'all know I love your lil' buggers. But the kids going in the adult pool is driving me nutso.

4) The larger the man, the shorter the speedo. South Americans love to expose themselves. The women wear bathing suits with no backside. The men adore their speedos, smaller the better. Ewww.

5) Arubian Animal Life is both cute and scarier. I squealed at an iguana that came near me. Made friends with the overly happy island dogs, who we've named Raul, Esteban and Pablo Escobar. There are some random green hopping/flying things that made me crawl into B's arms as a human shield...the bartenders loved that. And some random bug that no one here could identify but was pulsating and growling at me.

6) 2011 - the year of health and balance. Ok, yes, I am enjoying my cocktails. But, I've managed to get to the gym. And, I've loaded up on fruits and veggies (beyond the fruit and tomato juice in the drinks - btw Bloody Marys - YUM. Who knew?)

I know, its probably cold and miserable there (as my boyfriend continues to point out). But, it did take me forever to have a real vacation...which after losing vacation time even after using most of it for my eye surgery, I deserve it. So I'm soaking up every bit of sun and sand.
Yes, I've been suntanning healthy too...no random G burns. I'm a light brown and applying spf 30 like mad.

I miss you all. Truly wish you were here. And I can't wait to be vacationing with you in 2011!

Btw - shout out to my cousin Vinny (yes, I have a cousin Vinny bc I'm Italian) for the awesome vacation recommendation!!

Smooches,
G

Seriously

I woke up in a panic today. I quite literally was worried that I caused a horrible cosmic shift in the Universe because I realized just how truly happy I am.

Call it luck, call it being blessed...who knows, but hopefully it's here to stay.

Longer post to come!

Happy Birthday Heather!

And, one more thing... my latest new favorite song and lyrics:

I ain’t got no car
And I've got one pair of jeans
They’ve been stretched too far
And now they’re weak at the seams
I can’t say what’s next
And I got nothin' up my sleeve
But I don’t lose my head
Cause it ain’t really up to me

And I’m doing just fine
I’m always landing on my feet
In the nic of time
And by the skin of my teeth
I ain’t gonna stress
Cause the worst ain’t happened yet
Somethings watching over me
Like Sweet Serendipity
Sweet Serendipity

I don’t ask for a lot
No nothing more than I need
Because I love what I got
Don’t need to play the lottery
I just want to be strong
At the end of the road
I don’t want to hold on
I want the strength to let go

And I’m doing just fine
I’m always landing on my feet
In the nic of time
And by the skin of my teeth
I ain’t gonna stress
Cause the worst ain’t happened yet
Somethings watching over me
Like Sweet Serendipity

And what will be will be
In the nic of time
And by the skin of my teeth
I ain’t gonna stress
Cause the worst ain’t happened yet

A New New Years Eve...

Five years ago, I had one of the best trips ever to a brand new place, which instantly became my happy place. The people were friendly, the food and drinks marvelous and the company I was in was the best part of it all. We went into a bar, ready to play our next game of pool and stumbled into a karaoke night that was the equivalent of watching a Broadway audition. The folks on stage busted out this number, which stopped us in our tracks and gave our skin goose bumps. I read the lyrics today and funny... take on a whole different meaning now.

To my Key West traveling crew, I hope you have yet another magical time in one of the best places on Earth. May it be filled with delicious treats from Blue Heaven and new friends and adventures.

And for my NJ posse, I hope you're enjoying the snow! For those of you that I will see this New Years, I'm ready to rock it, well... maybe just roll it because I have a flight to catch.

Smooches,
G

Whoa...

I did it. A normal Griswold family Christmas...nothing caught fire, noone locked themselves out of doors. Heck, I even got everything I asked for except an external hard drive.

Clearly, the world is ending, but I can live with that.

Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night!

2010: According to G

Last New Years Eve, I eagerly wrote to you all, my dear friends and readers, that I had a feeling that 2010 would be MY year.  In fact, I was determined to do everything better this year. Did I succeed?

Well, if you go to the 2nd day of 2010, you'll see that I changed my tune to call 2010 the year of debt and destruction.  I found out I needed a second eye surgery, threw out my back, lost my Metrocard and destroyed iVanka, my second iPod and countless other things.  I stayed strong (well, I tried)...continued to go on miserable dates, worked way too much, stressed way too much and went through a 2 1/2 month recovery from my surgery.  Oh, and let's not forget the great refridgerator incident of August.  But, I learned things along the way.  I honed my mixology and cooking skills during Snowmedggedon, took my annual trip to Vegas - this time with an Elvis wedding (scratch one off the bucket list), learned you need a water line for an icemaker and as always, made my own fun along the way.

One day near the end of August, I woke up and my vision was clear - literally and figuratively.  Then, something big happened.  After 6 years of blogging about my dating adventures, I met a boy.  Not just any boy, the right boy.  And that's about when things went from good to great.

I'm not going to lie.  Of course this whole "being in a relationship" stuff is a lot of work.  You people have years of experience on me and I'm basically trying to rapid age myself to learning the ropes.  For awhile, I doubted whether or not I could actually do this, or if I was destined for the life of a chronically single girl.  And the simple truth is, I could, in fact, be a single girl forever.  But I don't wanna.  I like making someone smile.  I like having someone who likes to make me smile... shows up with flowers, cookies and soup when I'm sick... buys me a mini-sized stuffed dog who he named Slick because he knows Baxter is too big to travel with, but knows I miss Baxter when I travel... oh and by the way, calls Baxter by his name and complies with my desire to name inanimate objects.  Like I said, the right boy.

Is he perfect?  Of course not.  Is he perfect for me?  Well, all signs point to yes, which is why I decided to bring him home to mom and dad, who have not met anyone since my prom date.  Now, this is not without comedy.  I mustered the courage to tell my parents at Thanksgiving that I was seeing someone.  I wish I videotaped the reaction - my mother's giddy grin and my father's confused look and response of "he's not The Situation, right?" when I mentioned he was from North Jersey.

But from the moment we walked in the door, I could tell that they saw exactly what I see - a truly, genuinely, good and kind hearted person.  I didn't get a word in edgewise in the conversation between him and my dad.  They have some bizarre inside joke going too of "tell your dad I said X", then my dad laughing and saying "tell him I said..."

Yes, it is weird.  But, I am without a doubt, amazingly happy.  But, really truly, it isn't solely about the boy.  I just feel like this entire year, I finally let go and that is when everything just began to flow.

Take today - my office closed at 1.  This usually means that I'd work until 2 or 3, go home and sleep.  But, I decided to take the time and enjoy myself without direction.  Next thing you know, I'm off to Virginia to have lunch with him... then I finished up my last Christmas gift and stumbled upon this great outdoor market.  For once, I decided to just go where the wind took me.  And that, my friends, is how I stumbled upon realizing that I had found myself living my life.  Not that I didn't *live* before... but learning this art of balance has taken me my entire life.  To know when to make time appear and disappear... to know when to pause and soak things in.  The smell of the city... purusing a market.  Things I'd never even think of to make time to do.

Again, I credit you all for teaching me... letting me really absorb how you all find balance and not live in a crazy world of "have to".

2010 has been an amazing journey for me. It has, in fact, been MY year.  Not by luck, but by me finally making it so.

The year isn't quite over yet, but I'm prepared for whatever antics may come.  But for now, I will end with the hope of continuing to say:

And she lived happily ever after.

My love, warm thoughts and best wishes to all of you this Christmas.  I look forward to continuing this story... especially after the New Year when I jet off to Aruba with my best friend.

Smooches to all and to all a good night,
G

When there are no words...

Well, more like no time to write the words.  I have a blog post coming, but in the meantime, I thought I'd throw a little nostaglia at you.  And yes, I'm 34 years old and I still do believe there is a Santa Claus.  And this year, especially, has convinced me to keep being the same goofball that never stops believing that every once in awhile, everything falls into place.  More to come...

Smooches,
G

"DEAR EDITOR: I am 8 years old.
"Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus.
"Papa says, 'If you see it in THE SUN it's so.'
"Please tell me the truth; is there a Santa Claus?

"VIRGINIA O'HANLON.
"115 WEST NINETY-FIFTH STREET."

VIRGINIA, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except [what] they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men's or children's, are little. In this great universe of ours man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect, as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge.

Yes, VIRGINIA, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus. It would be as dreary as if there were no VIRGINIAS. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.

Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies! You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if they did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that's no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.

You may tear apart the baby's rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived, could tear apart. Only faith, fancy, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, VIRGINIA, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding.

No Santa Claus! Thank God! he lives, and he lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

It's TREE Day!!!

Yayyyyyy! Its my favorite holiday tradition. In just a few short hours, my beloved B, his pal Ron and I will be heading out to get the G staple, my annual Griswold family Christmas tree.

Last year, I think I mentioned that I may have had some Christmas spirit influence on some of my favorite folks. Well, this year, I'm proud to report I'm certain that I have.

How do I know? For starters, B told the plan for where the tree would be in my home this year in AUGUST, which requires rearranging the entire room.

His reason for moving it, was so it could be even BIGGER.

And, if that wasn't enough, when I asked him when we were moving the furniture, he responded:

"Not before we get tree. TREE. Big TREE."

All this from a guy who tried to convince me that table top trees were the only trees that I should have.

Well, I think my work here is done. Another person transformed by medicinal and magical holiday spirit.

Life is pretty good, kids. I have some other fun news that I'm sitting on, but will reveal soon enough.

Smooches,
G
