G Version 3.0

Aloha Readers -

As a fleet of people work once again to rebuild me, it’s nice to actually feel myself getting better and stronger. The new chapter is here and when the door closed, I jumped out the open window and haven’t looked back since.

A special shout out to the Universe for giving me a 48-hour hall pass that involved nonstop laughter and good times.  It’s been a long time since reality exceeded my expectations.

Thanks to all of you who made that happen – your help, support and love have made me come out the other side smiling. That was no small feat, as those of you who I let see me at my worst can attest. Text convo as example:

Me: “fair warning, I haven’t stopped giggling, laughing and smiling for the last 24 hours.”
Friend: "I'm warning you now - I'll believe when I see it, it's been awhile, but I'm so glad."

Let’s not fool ourselves; we all know there will be plenty of G antics and issues to come. But, for today, I’m happy to say I had my moment and will relish it.

Smooches to all,

G

Counting Blessings

There are many things that make me unlucky.  I am a klutz.  I’ve had some very interesting medical issues.  And, when it comes to being in love, well, it’s sort of like watching the Titanic sink with the burning 9/11 towers in the background.  Epic disaster.

And then there are those that make me among the luckiest people I know.  I have a crazy, yet lovable family.  I have a rather strong sense of humor and creativity.  I normally know how to make lemons from lemonade – or more realistically, I can make you a lemon drop shot.  And of course, I have many loving friends. There is a laundry list of those and it ranges from people I’ve known all my life to people I work with.  I’m not usually a person who asks for help but when I do it’s like watching an army assemble.

Despite whom I chose as a romantic partner, I have a decent ability to choose the right people to surround myself with.  They are people that not only care about their friends but the well being of others they don’t even know.  How do I know that?

At a backyard BBQ, my friends and I watched a man running after a frantic dog.  At first we were concerned the dog got loose.  But then, we realized the dog was searching for someone.  My friend stopped the man who told him that his 8-year-old autistic son went missing.  Before he could finish getting the words out 4 of us were out of chairs racing out the door.  We searched the woods and a creek trying to see if the dog’s sense of scent was leading us anywhere.  Another friend jogged up a busy road to make sure the boy hadn’t gotten lost up there.  Fortunately, the boy was wearing a locating device and was found, unharmed within 15 minutes.

Maybe a lot of people do things like that.  But, in this world, you don’t get to hear or even witness that every day.  Add in the layer where as you’re walking around realizing, these are just people, they are my friends - you find yourself feeling quite grateful.  Because if they are on a manhunt for someone they don’t know, imagine if they were looking for you.  It’s a feeling of security that truly can’t be matched by any one person or thing.  These are your people.  They have your back.  I wish everyone had that experience in his or her life, but sadly they do not.

These are the friends that hold your hand and let you silently weep, as you know that you’ll never be who they are – despite hoping or even trying to lead the “normal” life they lead.  No one wants to live on the Island of Misfit Toys, let alone be one of the toys.  But here I am, again.  And while it hurts knowing I’m the misfit, there is comfort in knowing that I’m loved regardless of that fact.  Living an ordinary life may never be in the cards for me… being loved by one person, having a family, these aren’t the hand I’ve been dealt.

But, I have been blessed.  And I can appreciate that.  Instead of one loving person, I have an army of loving people.  Instead of my own child, I have a fleet of kids who still manage to always light up when they sing out “Hey Aunt G!”… And it’s a great feeling to have all that.  It’s one I don’t take for granted.

Here’s to the next chapter.

G

Growing

The other day I was about to leave the house and grabbed my sweater hoodie. A giant (and really, not G's perception of giant - legit prehistoric size giant) spider was curled up and comfy on my white Chenile garment.

At first, I screamed the cry of my people, which goes a little something like "AHHHHHHHHHHHHH. HOLY SH*!T SPIDER GOING TO KILL MEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!" and ran out of the room as if my pants were aflame.

But, after running to grab hairspray, I regrouped and realized that I could handle this. So, I ran back inside the room, looked at the spider and yelled, "STAY".  Then hurled myself downstairs and got the vacuum instead so there was no margin for error.

After figuring out how that thing even works, I got the longest attachment and I sucked up spider - and half my hoodie... but I DID IT.

And that, dear readers, is growing.

Smooches,
G

Time is Short and I Love You All

I wrote this awhile ago and some of you have seen it. But tonight, it seems appropriate since we lost a classmate. So grateful that I have so many of you to call my home.

Tonight I went to Darlington House.  For those of you that remember it was the "fancy" place we ate dinner and then spent the night in the basement where we belong.  It's been about 10 months and it has been a whirlwind adventure.  Due to sickness, death and general chaos, I have never had my moment with any of you.  And those of you who know the moment know what I'm talking about.

I entered Darlington House and I was flooded with memories.  Mr.Magnus dancing to J. Timberlake.  Knowing it was Halloween and the East Coast's worst hurricane was approaching.  Would that stop my friends?  Hell freakin' no.  Neither would the fact that just a week before that I was in a hospital room eating the world's worst food and drinking half frozen fruit juice. I saw the pictures from Missy.  Oh goodness, I looked terrible.  Yet, despite me on an antibiotic for that week and weeks following, you were there.

You are always there.  Do you know how lucky I am?  How lucky we are?  I do.  I wish there were words or something to describe you all.  You're not just friends, you're not just family, you are MY LIFE.  And had my wedding solely been about me, I would've gotten up and said these very words.

Each of you come with your own moment, your own story that attaches me and you forever.  I could list them, but at some point they would all intertwine and become the same thread.

I don't want you to fret, I just want you all to know that I thank God and everyone else involved each day for each of you.

There's no reason for me writing this right now.  No big epic drama.  I just love all of you.  So much.  And usually there is a Christmas party or a time that I get to tell you.  But, I never had that time.  So, I apologize for the email, but I am someone who likes to live for today.  And I just don't want to wait to tell you that I love you all.  Every day.  More than anything... maybe even more than I should.  But I don't care about that, I care that you guys know right now and forever how I will always feel.  It's not a dress, it's not an occasion, it's just because.  I love you and miss you all.  I hope we get to see you soon.

love you,
G

Following Orders

It's not something I do, but when I get advice like this, it's hard not to:

"You need to stop doing what you think 'you are supposed to do' and do what you think. You have some of the most fantastic instincts in the world. Use them.

Be what you set the people you promote up to be.  Think and talk about yourself the way you do about others, because the fact is you are MORE impressive then you suggest they are."

Thank you my everlasting friend who has been saying this for more than half my life. I keep trying to prove you wrong, but I've yet to do it.

And thanks to all of you for having a place to call home even if it doesn't feel like it right now.

To Robin Williams...

Whether the coverage of Robin William’s completed suicide has been overdone remains a debate. To me, celebrating the life of someone who has influenced the lives of others can never be done enough. But, among the most important things to remember about celebrating lives of those who passed is that it should never be solely about celebrating the lives of celebrities.

Celebrities are people. And while some people aspire to be a celebrity in his or her own right, I’d argue their lives are among the most difficult of all – especially given today’s realm of social media. I can’t imagine anyone would want to live the isolated life of being followed by paparazzi, having every word scrutinized and knowing that there are very few people around you that you can indeed trust. The minute you become “someone”, everyone wants to have a piece of you. They will agree with you no matter what you say.

Working with and meeting various levels of celebrities throughout my career, you realize that some get caught up in this world of being adored, while others do not.

But, to celebrate Robin Williams, shouldn’t be about celebrating his celebrity. While people post quotes of what characters he played have said, they should know that while he delivered the words and made them impactful, it is often that he didn’t not invent the words (even though he was known to improvise). What he did know, that can’t be replicated, was how to bring those words to life. The art of communication and delivering messages is what he knew. As PR professionals, we often tell our spokespeople, to be prepared. Have your talking points. Never have an original thought when you’re about to go on – whether that is TV, an interview or a presentation.

While it can be trained, Robin had an artistic instinct to create impactful delivery. And maybe his publicist and manager cringed when anyone would hand him a mic because they never knew what would happen. Or maybe they just enjoyed the ride.

That is Robin Williams, the celebrity. But, behind “the celebrity”, is Robin Williams, the now icon for mental health (or illness, depending on how you look at it). There is no question that his death re-ignited another debate about the state of mental health in the U.S. It’s a terrifying spot we’re in and if the ongoing mass shootings haven’t been enough to turn the tide, then maybe it will take the death of an influential celebrity to look at the need for care in this country. It has been said quite often that comedians are among the most depressed people. Their innate ability to use that as a springboard to make others laugh and smile is a gift that certainly not all who struggle with mental disorders can achieve. It’s fascinating to me that some people think that Robin was a coward that he “gave in” or “took the easy way out”. Completing suicide isn’t a fleeting thought. It isn’t an impulse. You don’t have a bad day and decide that’s it. It takes serious contemplation and is brought on by a state of mental health that would chill anyone who hasn’t experienced it to their very core. These aren’t “sick” people. They’re mostly people that function in every day society living with a huge secret for fear they will be called “crazy” if they tell the world how they really feel.

But beyond celebrity and now unintended voice for mental health that Robin Williams will be remembered for, is Robin Williams the human being. And if you celebrate nothing else about his life, you should celebrate the words he didn’t write, but the accomplishments he made. The most touching moments are the ones that aren’t scripted, not in a movie. Perhaps the best tribute or pieces of footage I’ve seen is Robin Williams as he reacts to a “retreat” while visiting troops overseas. Just watching the minute facial changes every second is mesmerizing. First its confusion, then slight fear, then sheer humility as he realizes there is something bigger than him that is taking place. After that, you see his expression change and the light bulb go off as if he’s thinking “how can I even make an impact on these people who are saving our lives… what can I say to brighten their day?” Yet, when his performance resumes, he nails it.

If you move beyond this footage, there is one brief clip where he talks about his experience with other service men. But again, it’s less about the jokes he makes about this experience. It’s when he pauses his conversation to turn, shake someone’s hand and say “did you get your photo that you needed? Good. Merry Christmas.”

You can see it here at the bottom of the article.

My point in all this is that I’m not real sure that many cowards or selfish people are ones that think to turn to someone and say that. And there is a wide number of people who believe that those that complete suicide are cowards or selfish. But in my experience, they’re often the ones that care more about others than they do themselves.

And that's my two cents.

Thank you jimmy stewart

I've been up for hours. Despite the awful cold I have, I'm forcing myself to stay in bed. What I want to do is run down the boardwalk and yell at all the buildings. Funny how much I feel like jimmy Stewart at the end of its a wonderful life. It has been a wonderful journey and life and I can't wait to start the newest chapter today.

At this moment, life is good. And the girl who has written this blog about life, love, both happy and sad, is really looking forward to the happy ending. And the new beginning.

An Open Letter to the Universe

Dear Universe –

My goodness do you like to keep me on my toes.  Within the last 8 months you've brought me happiness, heartache and everything in between.  It wasn't enough to lose some family members and have some suffer with severe illnesses.  You decided I should have a hospital stay of my own.  Ok, I guess we can deal with that.  But I never thought you'd mess with my beloved Jersey.

As if seeing some of my nearest and dearest just days before you flooded everyone out didn't point out where my heart is, I assure you, Dear Universe, that making me agonize over the last few days feeling helpless and trapped far away absolutely did.

Yet, moments after you kick me in the crotch, forcing me to remember that everything can be replaced except the people you love… you at least reward me with a rainbow.  Knowing that I didn't lose anyone in that horrible mess and that everyone was ok – even though some got stuck w/o power or having to seek shelter.  Making my parent's house ok was quite the Christmas miracle.  I assure you, I'll be thankful.

And now, I'm openly asking you to let me ride out this roller coaster of a year as quiet as a merry-go-round.  You have exhausted me.

Deal?

Half smooch,

G

Still here

11 years later, I'm still thankful for the people with me that day. And to Jeff for carrying me out of the station. But the only memory I chose to relive is the outpouring of love from my friends and family when I went home a few days later. I will always remember being smothered with hugs and greeted by smiles.

Good guys win too

Sometimes, even a dysfunctional princess gets a prince. Hard to believe its been 730 days, the second anniversary of when The fiancé and I got reunited.

He even managed to not laugh when I got stuck in my dress this morning and then my elbow decided to try to beat up my closet wall and take me with it.

That's some love right there.

A New Philosophy

After some hard times, got to spend the weekend with some great friends and tons of laughter, which is almost always the best medicine.

It's where I picked up my new literal and metaphorical life philosophy: shower off the shit, jump into bed and worry about tomorrow...tomorrow.

Too funny. Few things make me happier then leaving somewhere with my stomach hurting from laughing too hard.

My thanks to all of you for that.

Sometimes

If you're fortunate in life, it is really difficult to tell all the people you love, that you love them every single day.  But, what's most important is that they know it without hearing it.  I love all of you, every single day.  And, this may sound impossible, but I think about each of you, every single day.

When life frustrates us, things get lost in daily stress and days seem bleaker than they truly are... I think it's important for us all to remember... someone out there does love you.  Every single day.  That doesn't make tough times go away, may not make the problems diminish.  But, if we really think about it... maybe, it will help us realize that sometimes the lemons we get really just need to be lemonade... or limoncello.  Whatever it takes.

Smooches to you all,
G

Day by Day

I've decided that even though yet another band did not, in fact, thank me for legally downloading their music which has not been downloaded in at least a decade, there is a lot of relevance behind this song when it comes to my life.

Happy Friday from The Hooters!

Smooches,

Give me what you can tonight
Time is all we have to play
Tell me you can't live without me
Tell me every day by day by day
Nothing lasts forever, only fades away
Day by day

Give me what you can tonight
I'm back tomorrow anyway
Show me some appreciation
Show me every day by day by day
The chance you gotta take's the price you gotta pay
Day by day

And if you break down, I will remind you
Of what you were yesterday
You can break down, I'll be behind you
Day by day

Boring.

There are plenty of dull moments. But none of them are mine. This is a blessing and a curse. Like say, one of the biggest storms taking down trees and wiping out the power lines of DC and Amtrak.  No biggy. Not like I was on my way to pick up my wedding dress. Thanks Universe!

Folks: prepare your emergency gear now for the pending nuptials. We just may need it. I know my dad has his snowblower ready.

Confessions of the Least Bridely Bride

I have learned two things today:

1) Never attempt to try on corsets alone.
2) If you are welling up with tears in a dressing room while stuck in a corset and pray for a fairy godmother, sometimes the universe answers you.

Thanks to the kind sales lady at Macy's who gave me a corset for $11... Only $70 off the original price.

See friends, I'll laugh about it later but I really feel like I am the reason why there will one day be a Twitter hash tag called #bridefail.

The Future

Yes, I know. Where have I been? I'm guessing some of you thought this blog was over.

But after many complaints I at least have time to give you the short story.

For those of you who don't know, The Boyfriend decided to give himself a title upgrade to The Fiancé. Yes, I am engaged.

One of the reasons I haven't written is because I learned that the minute you say yes, you are expected to have the entire wedding planned.

Well, I did not see any of this coming. I'm not the bride who secretly stashed a binder of ideas beginning at age 8. So I got a crash course in figuring all this out.

How did he do it? I promise, I will tell you the whole story.

What happens now? A lot! I have some fun stories to tell. Just need time to tell them.

Are you different? Nah pretty much still me. As judged by this recent converation about my dress coming in 4 months early:

G: So, my dress is in which means I had to scramble and buy shoes online… not sure if I like them, but we'll see.
Fiance: Are the shoes ok for you to go down the aisle w/o falling?
G: They're glitter shoes.
Fiance: But are they safe? Will you be ok?
G: They're glitter shoes.
Fiancé: But what kind of shoes do you need so you'll be ok walking down a staircase and THEN an aisle?
G: Glitter Shoes.

He shook his head and laughed so I assume he understands the logic. Glitter = Magic. So glitter shoes= magic shoes.

But knowing him, he's already invented 20 different ways to prevent me from falling.

Yes, so begins tales of G getting hitched.

Happy Valentine's Day! (really, seriously)...

Today, I'm wearing a shirt with hearts on it.  It's probably the first heart shirt I've worn since my third grade school picture.  Why?  Because, I'm a goofball who's in love with a guy who is a big ol' romantic goofball, and I have learned that makes you even goofier than usual.  Want proof?  Who else but a romantic goofball leaves you a red rose in a wine bottle and a card in the kitchen because he knows you're going to fill your water bottle before your 6:15 AM workout – and are sadly too tired and oblivious to see it anywhere else?  And who else, packs your purse with Junior Mints because they are your favorite?

Which is why at 6:45 pm last night I decided to race around Macy's to try to find something to wear that would make him smile.  And now I'm sitting here and work smiling, a lot, because I didn't think I'd ever really let myself be goofy enough to do something so completely silly.  So, I'm in a heart shirt.  Its black (his favorite color) with pink and white hearts.  I even have pink eye shadow to match it.  I know I'm ridiculous… which can only mean that I really am extraordinarily, deeply in love.

Who'd ever thunk?  And so now, I'm going to wish you all a Happy Valentine's Day.  You may not be with someone, but everyone loves something… so go make that your valentine.

The Adventures of Flat Stanley

Kids get me. I dig them for that. Kids let me be, well, a larger version of them. So imagine my excitement when me and The Boyfriend were chosen to be part of a Flat Stanley project.

I get to carry around a hand-colored paper doll named Stanley and show him around DC. Basically, I have an excuse to be a kid.

I was innocently just going to show him the traditional sites, but since Dee put in my head that I could do whatever I want - well, I'd be prepared for Stanley to experience the exciting life I lead. I'm refraining from bringing him to an all-day conference today...although can't promise that for the duration of his stay.

Pics to come!

Woo Hoo

Dear girl at my building's gym this morning -

This is not NY Sports Club. It is a gym in a building where people live. Hence why all of us are in sweats. I appreciate your confidence, but the striptease you gave while on the elliptical down to your bikini top was a little much.

Oh, and PS, we also live in Dupont Circle...so, I hate to tell ya sister, the few boys in the gym, weren't looking. Especially not in THAT way.

Just stick to working out and sweating. Or if not, take that act to Washington Sports Club.

If you ever had the pleasure of driving with me and Champy (my sweet Integra) between the years 1993 through 1999... when you play this, many memories will come back to you. Awh, Champster... you were one heck of a vehicle. Even when your door handles and windshield wipers fell off.

A quick musing

From the back seat of a taxi, the only time I have a second to breathe.

Tis the season for a lot things - hopefully for being grateful for what you have, not being selfish for things you want. In most cases, we all have what we need - just may not mean keeping up with the Joneses... But look around and I guarantee you have more than you think you do.

I have hope - and that's what I need more than anything else right now. Hope for a good time with friends and family over the next week or so. Hope for a healthy 2012 for me and all I know. Hope that I'll get to see all of you at some point.

But until then, I hope you have merry Christmases.

I Know, I Know...

Where have you been?! Did you walk 600 miles instead of 60?

In fact, I sorta did. I'm continuing all the hard work and have built my way up to...running! Ok, its on the treadmill and I'm pretty slow. Well, I thought I was until I read online that running a 5k in 30 mins is standard. And I do that and then 30 mins elliptical. Crazy, right?

Does that mean I'm not the clumsy G you all know and love? Absolutely not. I still trip over my two feet nearly every day. Just ask The Boyfriend who manages to be in the exact right spot to catch me before I go splat.

And the bigger news for those who don't know is that Casa de G, is now Casa de We... Yep, I grow more domesticated every day.

I've been to the grocery store - like 3 whole times. Of course, 2 of those trips were for the same pie because I misread the recipe, but still!!

And I still do all the fun goofy things you'd expect - like accidentally buying hooker heels online (they were silver and shiny). Thankfully, The Boyfriend was nearby becaue that fall would've been a long way down.

And I still miss you all too. Looking forward to seeing a bunch of you for T day!

573 Down, 60 to Go

For those of you on the Facebook, you know that my training is now complete.  Final count: 573.11 miles, 790.8 hours, 51,131 calories and 226,319 steps. I'm mad that I came up short 6.99 miles because of the week I was sick, but hey, I guess it's not too bad.

It has been a crazy 6 months.  I'd like to thank all of you for checking in and the ongoing cheering.  I have to give special thanks and much love to The Boyfriend for his ongoing watching out for me, making sure I didn't go overboard (I mean really, when have I EVER gone overboard?) and always reminding me to eat, stay hydrated, etc.    I'm sure he was probably tired of hearing me rattle out my training schedule, desperately trying to fit in every single mile amongst all the other stuff I had to do.  And I'm really appreciative that he stuck by me for this.

Part of me is pretty nervous.  I hope I make it the whole way, sans injury or exhaustion.  Because the only thing I have in mind is to get to that finish line.

At the end of the day, it's been an amazing journey and quite an accomplishment.  It didn't bring the people I lost to this awful disease back, but I'm hoping they'll be watching from above this weekend.  And I'm grateful that there are a bunch of survivors among me that I get to help as well.

If you are in Philly and do want to cheer me on, here is the link with the details.  http://www.the3day.org/site/PageServer?pagename=PL_Spectator

And in the end, I'm still just G

This is my last week of training.  Thanks to my human calculator/world's most awesomest accountant, Nicole, I will have walked the equivalent from DC to Indianapolis when this week is over.  I feel strong, I'm ready to run... in fact, I have started to do so (shh… that's considered cheating, so don't tell the training police on me).

Beyond the training, every day continues to be an adventure for me.  Everything is new.  When I walk, I still think about a lot of things… most days, my eyes still well with tears.  Sometimes because I'm stressed and tired, sometimes because I can't believe I'm still going, a lot of times because I still think about my furry best friend and how much I miss her.

And the rest of the time, I smile.  I never understood when you see runners and they have that look of misery on their face.  I guess its concentration.  For me, I'm normally smiling and singing to whatever is on iPurple (sorry District residents, sometimes I'm a little too audible).

I even smile when I think of my sweet Lucky, especially when I'm outside.  When I see something new, I think about how she would react.  Or I remember different routes I've taken, like climbing the Longport Bridge in Ocean City – and how ridiculous it seemed to walk a bridge… and back.

It's hard to not feel like a different version of myself with so many changes afoot.  But, then I realize… I'm still me.  I got a potato stuck in a light socket trying to fix a broken bulb.  I tripped on the treadmill this morning.  I'm just as goofy as I always have been.  And I'm ok with that too.

For me these 60 miles next week, is now just a mere pit stop in the journey I've already taken.  I'm looking forward to it, but, it's not the end.  It seems like this will only be the beginning of something yet undefined to come.

Hope you all stick around to figure out what that will be!

A Special Day!

Not because I'm back from my fantastical family cruise. Its because, as I've said for nearly 18 years now...this is the day the heavens opened up and dropped upon us one of my most favorite people, the Schmeffster.

I hope you have a great birthday, Schmeffy! I miss you much.

Smooches all!

To Know G is to Love G

I have so much to say - and never enough time to say it. This week, is a more typical past G week than usual - sick a few days before my family cruise, get caught in the rain with no cabs in sight... spill coffee down my new shirt. Oh, and I basically robbed Starbucks because the guy behind the counter said the coffee was bad, gave me a free drink coupon with my java... and then gave me back my money for my sandwich because the microwave broke. Sigh.

But one new thing that keeps me going is that The Boyfriend manages to know and yet still love me. So, after having a rather rough few days (yea, did I mention that at one point I actually cried at the end of Marmaduke the movie because Marmaduke got lost and had to be water rescued?), it was awesome to receive an email saying that I would need this for my walk:

If the Skirt Fits, Wear It!

I've been walking my butt off... literally. For two reasons 1) I decided to take on this walking challenge and 2) my doctor warned me that I needed to get myself healthy.

Healthy was really my primary objective, but there are some nice benefits. Six years and about six months ago, I wrote about a skirt that I bought while I was unemployed. It was really one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen in a store. I LOVED this skirt... which is judged by the fact that I spent $120 on it at a time when I was unemployed. And, I really don't buy expensive clothes to begin with...

I wore that skirt maybe once. Then it no longer fit. But, I couldn't part with it.

Today, for the first time in all of that time, I am wearing that skirt. I am not stuffed into that skirt, in fact, it fits perfectly.

So, I will be vain for one brief moment and tell you how awesome it feels to have acheived this.

Most of you know, I'm rarely proud of myself. I have moments where I'm proud of my work... but of myself, not so much. I'm really proud of myself for finally getting myself healthy.

And for being a pack rat and never ditching this gorgeous skirt.

Why Today Matters...

If we need a day like this to remember to be thankful and grateful, then maybe we missed the point of what 9/11 gave us in the first place. Don't wait for a day to remember to express your love for life, your friends and your family. Do it every day because we just don't know when our last chance to do that truly is.

I may not get to see you all, but there hasn't been one day in 10 years that I don't remain grateful for having every one of you in my life.

I will always remember to be especially grateful for Jeff, who not only came to rescue me, but when I wanted to give up amidst that bomb scare - carried my butt to get us to safety.

And of course to Melissa, for being by my side. Wasn't the best day for us to have to learn to be grownups...but I'm glad we did it together.

Smooches to all...

Fitness "Freak"

Have I mentioned I've been walking the past 6 months? Yea, I guess I have. I know some of you are wondering where the heck my time is going as I've been MIA... well, I've been walking so much, that even my company noticed. They wrote me up in the company health e-letter for my fitness/well-being achievements. Here's my interview below... enjoy it. I don't know how the Forrest Gump of Walking turns into a company example... and really who the heck thought I'd ever be an example for good health (unless they discovered booze cured cancer!)

Oh, and, all the walking/training is 6 days a week and my longest mileage per day is up to 17 miles. And that's led to me being 50 pounds or so lighter. So, I guess its paying off.

smooches,
g

How did you discover the fitness freak in you?
Haha. Hahahah. I think this is for the wrong gal, as I'm just starting out here. I was motivated to want to accomplish a real fitness goal – like people who do marathons. I've never been a runner or was involved in team sports. So, I figured if I was going to walk I should do it for a good cause, which is why I'm doing the Susan G. Komen 3-Day 60 mile walk for breast cancer.

I heard a rumour that you walk to work quite a bit. Is this true?
I walk to work when I can (weather/schedule permitting). It helps fit in some of the mileage I need to walk each week. It's also a great way to distress from a long day and avoid the Metro which usually a nightmare.

What is the most extremely athletic thing you have ever done?
When I do this 60 mile walk in October - that will be it.

If you were stranded on a desert island and could only bring one piece of sporting equipment with you, what would it be?
A kayak.

What is the most important lesson your life has taught you so far?
Laughter is the best medicine.

What sort of advice would you give to people who say: 'I don't have time to exercise'?
I would say they're right… which is why you have to use your superpowers and make time appear. It's tough, but it happens.

Naturally Disasterous

I was nicely told I needed to post again. By that I mean Dee told me "I bet all your recent brushes with natural disasters would make for a great blog entry." This is code for "entertain me, dagnabit."

So, I'll oblige.

There's so much going on - I really didn't need a friggin earthquake AND hurricane in the same week.

But, let's start with the quake. I'm not even going to sugarcoat this - I was scared as f*ck. My building was designed post 9/11, so it's designed to sway. If a thunderstorm happens, you see the windows give... if a large truck passes, you feel a little rumble. I work on the 8th floor. So, I'm going about my day when we feel a rumble, see no truck, then we feel a full on shake and the building sways from side to side - as if I was on a boat. I hear someone yell "everyone get the hell out" and I'm off.

Now, mock me if you will, but, post 9/11, I've always kept two things: 1) comfortable shoes and 2) a purse full of so much random stuff I would hands down win any episode of Let's Make a Deal. Because of my training, I carry a backpack most days, but that day I had conveniently spread everything out all over. I tried to swoop everything up but when it was too much, ditched the bag, clutched the bberry and my purse and ran the hell out.

By the time I reached the ground, I had a full on panic attack. Literally. I grasped for some Xanax and popped one w/o water. My first instinct inside was to look for the plane that hit, outside w/o a plane in sight, I heard someone say "maybe it was a bomb in the Metro" (my building is on a major line.

It was terrifying. I tried to work, but couldn't function, so I left for home.

The one thing that I was struck by was everyone checking in and sending their love. THANK YOU for that. It always overwhelms me.

On the heels of that, however, comes Irene. Now, my circuits are already overloaded. So, hearing that a giant ass hurricane is coming... well, I was ready to just go into hiding.

The Boyfriend, on the other hand, is always prepared. He spent days preparing - checking flashlights, radios, going to the grocery store... making sure we were in the best place. What did I do? I got highlights and was mildly alarmed I couldn't get a pedicure. No really. I was so out of sorts, I had nothing left to give.

Fortunately for us, it amounted to a rainy day that was a good excuse to couch surf. I know others weren't as lucky.

All of this fun kicks off the series of craziness I'm about to go through.

We head to the Outerbanks (I swear there are some left!). Then, the real fun begins. Crazy work, crazy home life... but I'm not going further into detail.

For now...

Smooches,
G

Selling G

One thing that continues to amaze me about The Boyfriend is his ability to get the little things.  For example, purchasing and keeping a shiny, light up ball in the car to amuse me on car trips... or a light up bubble gun for my birthday.  Now, I'm quickly learning that he's figured out some of the secrets of G and are using them to influence our purchasing decisions.

The Cat's Diary

Day 983 of My Captivity

My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects. They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while the other inmates and I are fed hash or some sort of dry nuggets. Although I make my contempt for the rations perfectly clear, I nevertheless must eat something in order to keep up my strength.
The only thing that keeps me going is my dream of escape. In an attempt to disgust them, I once again vomit on the carpet. Today I decapitated a mouse and dropped its headless body at their feet. I had hoped this would strike fear into their hearts, since it clearly demonstrates my capabilities. However, they merely made condescending comments about what a "good little hunter" I am. Bastards!
There was some sort of assembly of their accomplices tonight. I was placed in solitary confinement for the duration of the event. However, I could hear the noises and smell the food. I overheard that my confinement was due to the power of "allergies." I must learn what this means, and how to use it to my advantage.
Today I was almost successful in an attempt to assassinat e one of my tormentors by weaving around his feet as he was walking. I must try this again tomorrow, but at the top of the stairs.
I am convinced that the other prisoners here are flunkies and snitches. The dog receives special privileges. He is regularly released, and seems to be more than willing to return. He is obviously retarded. The bird must be an informant. I observe him communicate with the guards regularly. I am certain that he reports my every move. My captors have arranged protective custody for him in an elevated cell, so he is safe. For now ...

Love is never asking people to edit themselves

Great article, which everyone should read... even though it's geared toward companies... it really applies to people... i love this part:

Love is never asking people to edit themselves
Several years ago, I conducted a workshop with the identity company, Brains on Fire. Since then, I have yet to come across another company that more epitomizes love. As their founder Robbin Phillips suggests, "Be famous for the people who love you and for the way you love them." In my experience, the best way to love people is to let them express themselves. Without restriction. Without resorting to code. And without having to look over their shoulder. After all, nothing disengages people quicker than interfering with the expression of their individuality. Leave people liberated. Let them live their brand and stay loyal to themselves. Create a safe place where individual creativity can shine. Petition people to inject their personality into everything they do. What kind of love will you become famous for?
----

7 Things You Never Have to Do

"Love is never having to say you're sorry."

This phrase originated in the movie Love Story, but has since been modified, satirized, patronized and reorganized through dozens of movies, songs, television shows and other popular art forms.

And that got me thinking: I wonder if there are other things we never have to do? In business, in life and in love, maybe there's an entire line of thinking based on this idea.

I've developed a list of seven examples.

1. Generosity is never having to keep score

I recently dropped my laptop. Right on the asphalt. Completely dented the corner of the screen. But when I took it into the Apple store, they were unexpectedly generous. First, the guy at the Genius Bar told me he once dropped his laptop too, but down an escalator. Second, he agreed to send my computer to the repair center that day. Third, he let me back up my data in the store before I went home. Fourth, they returned my computer to me two days faster than they promised. And fifth, they didn't charge me a dime. No questions asked. I was speechless. Just when I thought Apple was all style and no service, they delivered. Just when I thought Apple was all hype and no help, they delivered. That's the thing about generosity: It's not corporate scoreboard. It's not something you can choreograph. You just dance in the moment and respond to the now need. How are you giving yourself away?

2. Class is never having to apologize for transparency

The company 37Signals uses a company blog to foster a direct conversation between developers and customers. Not to shamelessly promote the website, but to solicit feedback on their user interface. That's class. Not to bother people into buying from them, but to keep customers abreast on programming changes in real time. That's class. And not to hawk the new software programs, but to explain the motivation behind the changes to their existing ones. That's class. They also give virtual tours of their design process, display screen shots of the revised versions of new layouts, and even host streaming question-and-answer sessions between users and the founder of the company. That's class. No wonder their users are so fanatical about the company. How much loyalty are you losing by being opaque?

3. Commitment is never having to discipline yourself

At a recent art fair, I had the chance to meet one of my favorite cartoonists: Paul Palnik. I shook his hand. I thanked him for his work. And I told him never to stop making art. His response was perfect, "I have no choice; it's who I am." Think Palnik has to discipline himself to draw every day? Not a chance. Because he's committed. And that's exactly what happens when you decide to play for keeps: Commitment deletes distraction. No matter how slammed you are, there's always time for the non-negotiables. No matter how overextended you become, you still create space to execute what matters. What if you made a list of a hundred reasons why you do what you do and kept it in your wallet?

4. Freedom is never having to bury your desire

I once worked for a client who blocked Internet use at their office. From everybody. And the saddest part was, they were a sales organization. And their 200 employees— most of whom were under the age of thirty—had no online access. Which I certainly understand from the perspective of productivity and security. Nobody wants their employees wasting time when they should be making sales. But these people are cold calling all day. Without online access, they can't Google their customers, conduct research on their competitors or leverage social media as a listening platform. If you want your people engage at work, don't let the feeling of formality keep them from communicating freely. Is your office a prison or a playground?

5. Confidence is never having to say you're cool

If you have to tell people you are, you probably aren't. And if you have to tell people you aren't, you probably are. That's what I don't understand about social media: People are so insecure about their own value that they need to embed a graphic that points to the button that asks strangers to like them. I'm sorry, but popularity is not a substitute for truth. If you have to interrupt me with an e-mail that asks me to like you, we're done. On the other hand, if you're awesome, people will know it. Being amazing never goes out of style. Are you spending money trying to make people like you, or investing emotional labor trying to make the world better?

7. Creativity is never having to grow up

Instead, it's about growing younger. It's about "escaping adulthood," according to artists Kim and Jason Kotecki. Reengage your playful spirit. It's attractive, it's relaxing and it's more enjoyable to be around. Besides, there's nothing that can't be taken lighter. Even the serious issues. Second, build a reservoir of positivity. Say "yes" as often as possible. Especially when it would be easier, cheaper and more convenient to say "no." That's where creativity lives. And lastly, build enthusiasm into small moments. Your energy is your greatest asset. Speak with passion or risk being unheard. Just make sure your energy is supported with truthfulness. Otherwise you're just passionately incompetent. How creative do people remember you as?

shallow achievements of the day

I went all day in white and am not stained like a dalmatian and new shoes were awaiting my arrival at home! Shiny ones too!

You need a new blog post, STAT.

"Just sayin".

I love and miss you too, my peeps. Where have I been? Did I get sucked into the GBAS abyss?

Nah. I'm good. Very good. Been spending my summer training for my walk. When I'm not walking, I'm pooling. I look like I'm a different race with this tan. And I've purposely put in extra training during the week so I can swim and chill on the weekends.

GBAS was pretty good - minus the microburst in OC that literally tore one of the doors off the hinges. Chilled with the Boyfriend and my pop playing a game called Fact or Crap - turns out both of them are full of it. :-)

I miss my friends. Everything continues to whiz by. I'm stuck with the dilemma of how to squeeze so many good or fun things into a week. Down time is definitely a thing of the past.

I'm enjoying all of it - but its just so strange how my life has changed so much... And, I have to say, I totally dig the Boyfriend's family. Very cool peeps, with just my type of sarcastic creative humor. (Read: dirty).

His brother and I have had at least two giggle fits on the couch. And overall, its so truly welcoming and fun to be around them. Hoping for more to come.

I still miss you all though. Schedules have been craptastic. And I'm really hoping that it won't take until Christmas to see you. But seeing as I have 2 open weeks from now until after my Oct 16 walk...crikey, I'm a girl on the move.

But loving every minute of this roller coaster.

Determined.

There will be no GBAS this year.  Despite having my typical GBAS beginning to this b-day season.  I am cancelling GBAS.  I'm going to have a good birthday, because there is no reason why I shouldn't.

So suck it, Universe.  You can keep trying, but I ain't buying what you're selling.

Storytime...

At least I'm good for something... G-injury stories told far and wide...

Schmeffy: oh...story time. What was the reason you got fired from the telemarketer?

G: Ha.
well, i didn't get fired
i never went back
i got written up for not doing 2 rebuttals to a blind person for a GM mastercard
despite me explaining to my manager that the person was BLIND and therefore couldn't DRIVE
this was also a day after i fell down the stairs and broke my foot there
and was written up for taking a 17 min break instead of a 15
b/c i couldn't walk the 8 floors w/the broken foot
and the elevator got stuck
why do you ask?

Schmeffy: just having a discussion about bad telemarketing jobs

G: haha and you think of me.

Schmeffy: yes!

Weaknesses

Asking for help has never been my thing. I'm also not so good at being in the spotlight... I get ultra shy - which I'm sure most of you are thinking can't be possible, but I assure you it is true.

That's why the fundraising was a good exercise for me. I can ask for just about anything for anyone else - heck, its my job. But if its me, I clam up.

So, you can imagine my surprise that I reached my goal. Now imagine walking into my job and hearing that my coworkers put together an entire building-wide bake sale to help me raise my money as a surprise. And looking at an overflowing table of food that people contributed too, designed signs, you name it.

Last week, during one of my 5 mile walks I heard someone screaming my name. It was my office's security guard, who left her post to cheer me on...she saw me pass her on my first leg of the trek and ran out as I was walking back. I was hot and tired, but after that small "hey - you go, Miss Gina!!" I floated the remaining 2.5 miles.

I'm overwhelmed by the kindness people can show when we step outisde our boxes. I know I have the type of friends and family who have taught me how to be kind, caring and compassionate. They do so all the time - whether its a "hey I miss you" email or taking time to help someone recover from a painful procedure.

It takes so little to make someone's day....and I fully intend to continue to pay it forward.

Smooches,
G

Grateful

I have a bunch of reasons to be grateful and feel accomplished as we are about 1/2 way through this year.

I completed my Mental Health First Aid class.

I hit my fundraising goal yesterday, thanks to the kindness of family, friends and some strangers.

I'm managing to keep on track with my training, despite the summer getting more chaotic. Gotta love surprise client dinners.

I have even managed to lose at least 32 pounds since about March.

But, I'm most grateful for my boyfriend who loves me despite all this...and even endures my craziness, which I hope you all continue to explain is part of my charm.

Anyone that can not only put up with me, but still manage to show up - and with flowers and a smile nonetheless, has to be a good dude.

And I do love a good dude.

Miss y'all...

G

Taking a Stroll

So, I've been walking. A lot. Over 115 miles to date. I walk past all the monuments erected for all the great people who have made this country what it is. I watch people...I get to see families explore this city. I watch happy dogs whose owners are taking them for their evening strolls. Man, does that make me miss Lucky. Especially when I see dogs who say hello to me.

I've watched birds enjoying puddles and taking bird baths. Ducks and ducklings figuring out how to make their way in the world.

I've had to listen to at least half of the 3,000+ songs in iPurple. I have so much time to think. Maybe too much time.

So you'd think by now I'd be covered in G-injuries - bruises, shin splints, broken shoulders.

I must admit, I was feeling pretty proud - that is until the giant gash on my left leg and gross scab on my right showed up.

Was it from a killer 7 mile trek? If it was - wouldn't that make me cool?

No, it was from me tripping and falling like the graceful bull I am at the Phish show.

After a lovely visit to the Howard County EMT folks, all of which B photographed and posted on Facebook, I was all fixed up. And we were able to dance. And dance. And dance some more.

I can't remember the last time I danced for that long or enjoyed a concert that much. I actually felt like I was a kid again.

Pretty awesome stuff.

Much, much more to tell...but, never anytime to write it.

I miss you all.

G

Mama I'm (be)Coming Home(sick)

I miss my Jersey. I miss my peeps in Jersey. I love my peeps here - boyfriend included. But, as we sat and ate some actually decent Italian food (imported from Staten Island), I remembered how much I missed home.

Love you guys. Trying to figure out some time to make it home.

My life as a dog

I've always wanted to be a dog. In fact, if I could be a dog, I'd want to be a golden retriever. Happy go lucky, admittedly goofy - yet pretty enough to pull that off.

Yet, I realize that try as I might, I am a chihuahua. And not even a cool Yo Quiero Taco Bell pup or like my friend's sweetie named Lucy.

I am the typical, hyper anxiety chihuahua. One who was apparently over ambitious earlier this year and attempted to take on way too many "do well by doing good" goals which is why I'm currently a ghost to most of you.

For example, last night after working until 7:45, I trained for my upcoming 60 mile walk in the 90+ degree heat by walked 4.5 miles and eating dinner at 9:15 pm. I was up again at 6 am to do laundry and cross-train, so I could make my 6-9 pm Mental Health First Aid class tonight.

And after today's 16+ hour day, I will follow with a 6 mile walk tomorrow night so I can keep up with all the weekend stuff and not hold us back.
At least I went to DisneyWorld and the Boyfriend did NOT lose me...which to me signals he may actually love me. (We did have a great time - hopefully pictures to come).

I am also homesick after the holiday weekend. Even though I'm responsible for bad weather during Memorial Day, I do miss my Jersey Shore. But, I could def get used to having a pool - especially since I can see and swim! It rocks!!

I miss and love you all.

Smooches,
G

The “C” Word

As you’ve seen on TV, you don’t want to anger a Jersey girl. I may not have the accent, but I do possess the anger of any Real Housewive or Jerseylicious gal. And after losing 2 family members in the past 5 weeks, I’ve got a number one thing on my list. The “C” Word.

That’s right, cancer, I’m pissed off. You infected one of my closest friend’s sisters – both of them in a matter of months. You took my aunt. And this week, you took my beloved best furry friend… my own dog.

And now I’m coming for you.

I’ll be the first to admit, when I set out to walk 60 miles in 3 days, I really didn’t think I had a strong personal link to this issue, at least not as strong as my fellow teammates who lost their grandmother to breast cancer.

I lost my grandmother too, she also had the “c” word – but survived that battle, unfortunately not the war. I have other relatives too, who are alive to tell the tale.

But the more I think about cancer, the angrier I get. And the angrier I get, the further I find myself walking.

I’d be foolish to not think you’re eyeing me up – given my family history and statistically speaking. And I’m telling you right now, I’m staring you down and I plan to fight you. You’ve picked on my friends and my family enough. It’s your turn to go down.

And one step at a time, I will bring you there. Because one way or another, I’m going to get my donations necessary to walk. Ask anyone I know, I’m the most stubborn girl you’ll ever meet. So, I’m going to walk all 580 miles for my 6 months of training… then in October I’m going to walk those 60 miles in 3 days with two of my best girls by my side. And if you think I’m tough, well, you haven’t met these gals. And frankly, they’ve got a bone to pick with you too.

I’d suggest you run and hide, “c” word. Because you’re on my bad side and it’s not a place anyone wants to be.

My sweet Lucky

Always the angel, she passed away with us holding her.

She was the best. I will miss our walks, playing ball in the tennis courts. Its amazing what a dog teaches you about life, when you think you're teaching a dog.

Lucky taught me how to slow down...sniff (or smell) the flowers. Really look around at life - and just take a minute.

She showed me its ok to be the goofball that you are and its important to play.

And she never judged a book by its cover - she was sweet to everyone. I don't think there was a single person that didn't melt and smile when she'd look at them. In fact, she also used to just wander up to people's houses, especially down the shore. Noone ever gave it a second thought to let her stand there and say hello.

Dogs are amazing creatures. They are what most of us hope to be - happy and a best friend. I will always miss my furry best friend.

Help

if there was ever a time for love and prayers, it would be now. Please send me what you can spare friends.
Lucky will not be recovering - she has lymphoma and a mass on her spine that will make her unable to walk again. My sister and I will be saying goodbye tomorrow.

She was and is my reason to be a better person. I hope to be 1/2 as lovable and happy as she has always been.

I will miss her so much...my sweet Lucky.

Please send good vibes

For Lucky the Wonderdog...she's currently hospitalized in Red Bank. Not really sure what's wrong, but she's having trouble walking.

For those of you who know my unnatural love for dogs, you can appreciate how distressing it is. :-(

And for those of you who know Lucky - you know that she's just the sweetest, most lovable dog. She's always there for me - I wish I could be returning the favor.

Smooches,
G
