What to give to the couple who's got it all...

Fifteen years ago, my boy Schmeff likely hit the Guinness record for longest best man speech. I begged him to let me edit it but I wasn't even allowed a preview.

Every word and second of the speech was well worth it.

I know I need to say something but what to say to the couple that has everything?

Every emotion hits - I'm so proud of what they created, the home and life they built. The amazing kids they created (even if 1 is likely at least 50% me...and only Maury Povich can prove it.) The fact they let me be part...I am their Joey and I now get to show up at their house in 5 minutes or less. I eat their food and drink their booze, usually I make the drinks. It's the least I (aka Mary Popov) can do.

They are my couple muse. They are the goal I hope to achieve one day. I live in admiration of them.

They are the two people that hold my life together. That stay with me when I fall apart. That fix every wrong and help with every right. They've licked my wounds, held my hand and pushed me to go on... And to come home (with a U-haul and many Doritos). They've welcomed everything and everyone I've ever brought home with open arms.

Twenty years ago in Jamaica, my drunken wooden parrot buying friend said that he found his girl, his best friend. He was right.

I have nothing to offer them beyond my thanks.

I'm forever in their debt and in their lives, whether they like it or not.

I am so proud of both of them and what they've achieved.

So, beyond these silly words... I offer my love which is as solid as their love to each other and to their family. Whether it's comedic relief- spit, spat change the conversation...or beyond.

Thank you. For the love you have for me, the love you have for each other...The unwavering love of making sure your home is the envy of all on Pinterest...

Thank you. You two have raised the bar on how to not only make marriage work, but make it work right.

Happy 15th anniversary to the loves of my life...may you continue to love, laugh, get aggravated...make up...because you are what the definition of true love and marriage is in my eyes and what it always will be.

I love you. I thank you.

And I hope that this long winded post will only come close to what Schmeff started. There's no gift I can give you that will express everything...but there is always Asian Chef.

All my love,
G

Signs You’re Successful—Even If It Doesn’t Feel Like It

I didn't write this... it came from here... but I think everyone, self included, needs to read it, then commit it to memory. While I typically take the It's a Wonderful Life success measure (no man who has friends is a failure)... I do often hit all of these things below.

When it comes to success, our eyes often lead us astray. It's hard not to feel like the most successful people are those with the biggest houses, the most expensive cars, and the most influential friends. Regardless of what you achieve, there's always someone with more, and this can make you feel like you're losing. The problem isn't your lack of toys; it's believing that toys indicate true success.

Real success is about who you are and how far you've come. If you ever worry that you're not as successful as you should be, you may be evaluating yourself against the wrong criteria. Sometimes you just need a reminder as to what you've really accomplished in life. The success indicators that follow will help you do just that.

You're no longer the center of the universe. We all know "successful" people who act like they're the center of the universe. It's their world and the rest of us just live in it…right? That's not success. True success requires the ability to feel empathy—to realize that other people's feelings and dreams are just as important as ours, and we cannot succeed without them.

You stay positive. Hope and optimism are essential components of a happy life. If you dwell on the things that go wrong, you become bitter and resentful. When that happens, you fail—no matter what you may have achieved. Real success means always seeing the bright side and believing you have the power to make even the worst situations better.

You know that failure isn't forever. You've learned that the only people who never fail are those who don't try. When you fail, you don't automatically assume that you're a failure. Instead, you embrace each failure as an opportunity to learn something—and then you move on. If you still struggle with this at times, know that you'll never experience true success until you learn to embrace failure. Your mistakes pave the way for your success by revealing when you're on the wrong path. The biggest breakthroughs typically come when you're feeling the most frustrated and the most stuck. It's this frustration that forces you to think differently, to look outside the box and see the solution you've been missing.

You keep things in perspective. Sometimes bad things happen. It's part of life. For most of us, however, our very worst day would seem like a vacation to somebody who has real problems—like not having enough to eat, or trying to survive a civil war. Locking your keys in the car—or even getting passed over for a promotion—aren't that bad once you learn to develop perspective. If you've mastered the ability to keep your problems in perspective, mark it down as a huge success.

You ask for help when you need it. Refusing to ask for help, no matter how much you're struggling, is a sign of emotional immaturity. Asking for help means that you no longer feel like you have something to prove by being perfect. It shows you aren't afraid of people discovering your weaknesses and you understand no one succeeds alone.

You realize that life isn't a zero-sum game. It's not a see-saw, either. Just because somebody else achieves a big success, that doesn't mean you suffer a loss in equal proportion. You just didn't win that particular time. One sure sign of success is the ability to celebrate others' achievements with sincere enthusiasm.

You can tell the difference between drama and excitement.
Remember the days when stable relationships were boring, and you quickly got tired of anyone who treated you as they should? If that kind of "drama" is a thing of the past, congratulations. If you prefer stability and depth to drama, you're succeeding.

You no longer care what other people think. You only worry about what other people think when you still feel like you have something to prove. Conversely, you know you've "made it" when you don't worry about that anymore—when you're true to yourself and your principles, and satisfied with your life. You know you've made it when you understand that other people's opinions are just that—opinions. They have no effect on reality. They don't change who or what you are.

You accept what you can't change and change what you can.
There's a difference between pessimism and practicality. If there's a hurricane headed your way, there's nothing you can do to stop it. But once you accept that the hurricane is coming, you can start working to mitigate its effects. If your company downsizes and you get laid off, every moment you spend in denial just delays whatever is waiting over the horizon. You're able to move on only when you start exploring your options and making plans to change what you can. Taking responsibility for changing the things you don't like about your life is one of the biggest indicators of success.

Bringing It All Together

There's no sense in feeling like a failure just because you think you should have a better job, a bigger house, or a nicer car. Real success comes from the inside, and it's completely independent of circumstance.

Lucky 13

I never realized what a good number could do. But it made my day even better as a double winner - roulette and the horses.
There's probably a million things I should've done today. But what I needed was to have a good day - one that was G being G...something that hasn't happened in a very long time.

I needed a hand to make sure I didn't wimp out, so I had to gather Team Drunk & Disorderly (aka me + superhero). Continuing my mission of being a bad idea bear, we busted out to a local casino so I could teach him all the wonders of signing up for a comp card, how to make the $10 free play last for 4 hours and the ins and outs of roulette.

Capping that off with a trip to my favorite family to watch the race, find out we won our bets on two out of three horses and that sushi burritos exist in the suburbs.

We even fit in some frisbee.

What a full day o' fun. Just what the doctor ordered, like really, I can guarantee my doctor would've approved.

It's been a rough few months and it certainly won't be getting easier but finally getting a day to break away was amazingly priceless.

The juggle and struggle continues but seeing some light today.

Everyone's favorite BFF

"A sucker is born every minute" - Mark Twain. This was the Jeopardy final Q. It was not the best night. There was no success...in my definition.

But this all comes from your local favorite best friend.

You've heard me say before that everyone has a talent. My talent is being your best, good friend. Your personal supporter. The cheerleader in your life. I've said numerous times, what I do best is get people to where they need to be.

I'm super successful at this, personally and professionally. Pro: Did you stop eating carbs between 1999-2003? Awesome and I'm sorry. On the personal front, I can provide a list of all the wonderful men I know that are now happily married and have the most amazing families. (Not sole credit, but yes, will take partial credit for pushing some people along).

This is where my bestie would make me come to dinner and ask me "who's taking care of you?"

Everyone and no one, at the same time. The good thing about being the person behind the scenes is that you get to watch people move forward in beautiful ways...marriage, success, families.

The bad thing is you're still the person who everyone thanks from afar. You're the person that smiles and knows that you've helped make life better for other people. My first boss told me that you will never be thanked for your work. You do your job, you make the client look good and they take the credit. It was jarring until I realized that this is the one place that my personal and professional life are exactly the same. There is no public thanks. There is no win. The joy and success is watching everyone else win.

And while it sucks in a lot of ways, it is also gratifying to see everyone around you succeed and know that in a very small way you helped. Even if it was just a moment in time.

Success

A successful night is when your bestie insists you deserve a home cooked meal, sends her husband out for margarita mix and even though your boss ended your evening at 7:30...you enjoy a homemade cinco de mayo feast and of course, tequila.

Sometimes people know exactly what you need to relax...even if it's a school night.

Thank you.

Need Your Help...

A friend of mine gave me this around Christmastime. If I was to be honest, this Helen Keller quote might as well be what's on my own tombstone. I don't think it's a trade secret that my friends are my life. I've fought many a battle and lost things along the way because I stand by this motto.
I don't and (unless there is some form of immaculate intervention) won't have kids. I have a loving, albeit crazy family. But, the patchwork of my life is my friends.

I'll do anything for them... anything for their kids. I've given for fundraisers, school events... whatever anyone needs.

Tonight, I'm putting my faith in my friends, but this time, not for me. While I'm thankful for all they've given me I need to ask them to give to someone else. You've heard me reference my superhero... well, he needs help. And while neither of us are fans of asking for help, there comes a point where you've exhausted your options and wave the white flag.

I've watched my friend (superhero) battle cancer the past few months which hasn't just attacked his body, but attacked his mind, his spirit and his wallet. It's been painful (selfishly) to standby knowing that he'd be upset if I told anyone about his weakness.

He waved the white flag and I did the only thing I know how to do. I sent out my own bat signal and asked for help from my friends.

Some people read this blog anonymously. I'm asking for your help too. Please share this link https://www.gofundme.com/22n9efyr in the hopes that there are some Good Samaritans just waiting to help. And if you're my friend, please do what you'd do for me. I know I've exhausted you all on the favor front, but, this is a pretty dire situation.

My ongoing love to you all.

Smooches,
G

Superheroes

I'm behind in my movie watching, and right now superhero seemed like a good choice since I'm missing my own.

But holy crow, this scene made me laugh and I'm pretty sure it would make him laugh too:

So many nightmares...

Yikes. Things that actually could happen that show up when you sleep are way worse than being chased, etc. nightmares are such miserable experiences.

When the bar goes dry...

This is why things are in pairs. There are things I shouldn't be allowed to shop for alone. 1) technology. This was discovered when I decided to buy a tv that I named Stevie bc it lit up and crowed like a rooster.

But more importantly, 2) there's a reason why there is a drunk & a disorderly. After months of overworking, my bar was so dry, I had lost all my favorite men and my beer fridge became a soda fridge. Desperate times, I decided to go to the liquor store unsupervised...and the one with the biggest shopping carts. Apparently, I did such a bang up job restocking my shelves...they even loaded my car for me.

Bar. Is. Open.

Dude, that's my girl

If you haven't seen the movie Singles, you really should. Some of the best music of the 90s + Cameron Crowe = awesome. One of the characters, Janet, has a laundry list of what she was looking for in a guy at the start of the film. She then changes her outlook and says "basically if a guy says bless you when I sneeze."

I get this. A lot. Not that I had a list as long as hers, but my only thing left is someone saying "dude, that's my girl." And maybe, I'm not doing anything profound when it happens. Maybe I'm just answering a question, shooting an 8 ball in the corner pocket or about to drink someone under the table... But knowing someone turned to anyone and said "dude that's my girl" is my only prerequisite at the moment.

Tall order, I'm sure. But it's my last leg.

Why some of us have to keep working, no matter the stakes...damn me for having the motor. (At least I'm a fun person!)

Missed one

Pretty sure I've been waiting for a miracle for closer to 100 years...but forgot this one in last post.

All relatable...

It's been a very chill (read: lazy) weekend. So I collected all the pics and stupid FB tests that were particularly relatable. Shout out to my adopted family for the sushi dinner and Tito's on Friday. You were the only humans I interacted with all weekend...but my furry boss loved it.

Guilty

Facebook nailed it. I've said before, I come from a long line of wonderfully strong women. My grandmother and her sisters, while so different, were the strongest women each with their own beautiful and personal tenacity and grace.

This week, my cousin who I'm always grateful for especially how steeped he is in my family history shared this tidbit with me:

Your great-grandmother once said to me, "Don't wait for your ship to come in.  Row out to meet it."

It made me smile, which has been rare these days as I keep trying to persevere through this new gig with endless hours and gain some handle on the rest of my life as well.

As unique as I would love to consider myself and as much as I wish I had the luck people around me do...to be happy, to be settled with a family...I'm still in that rowboat trying to meet that ship. My arms are tired but I guess you just keep going.

Apex

My phone is filled with a million positive sayings. The last couple months have been quite the struggle. But I'm certainly not alone both with life's struggle and the support I have.

Through my many whines and cries, I've had some extraordinary, patient friends who keep me off the ledge and try to push me through the tough times. Below is my most favorite example. Whenever I call, this is read to me...mostly I sniffle through as I listen to the words and sometimes I want to say "but still!! Wahh!!" Yet, in the end, it helps and has become part of my fight song...rallying cry.

My ongoing love to the person who wrote it since they haven't managed to let me fall off the mountain...and for as clumsy as I am, is no easy job.

"Remember, life's a mountain.

Though you live life going through trials and tribulations
no matter what you face, the "will" and "want" get you to the top

You're going to have to fight and fight.
So fight Hard.
You're going to have a days of tears. So Wipe them.
You're going to have days of wanting to give up.
So Don't.
Just Remember, life's a mountain!

They say that you got to grab life by the horns.
They say when life gives you lemons, make lemonade
They say life is what you make of it, make it good
Just Remember, life's a mountain

Don't ever give up, no matter the task.
Don't ever give in, no matter whats asked.
Don't never give out, less than your best.
Don't never hold back,
Just remember, life's a mountain.
I'll see you at the top."

Last year...

I was apparently very smart and relaxed... I wrote this: 2015: there is no question kindness trumps smarts. So is a focus on others with a realistic balance on yourself too.

Life imitating art, imitating life

Totally applicable... and my favorite. Of course, I was at a club dancing to 1999 when it turned 1999. Polly Esther's played that song non-stop for a good hour of Jan 1, 1999....

I never meant to cause you any sorrow
I never meant to cause you any pain
I only wanted to one time to see you laughing
I only wanted to see you
Laughing in the purple rain

Purple rain, purple rain
Purple rain, purple rain
Purple rain, purple rain
I only wanted to see you
Bathing in the purple rain

I never wanted to be your weekend lover
I only wanted to be some kind of friend
Baby, I could never steal you from another
It's such a shame our friendship had to end

Purple rain, purple rain
Purple rain, purple rain
Purple rain, purple rain
I only wanted to see you
Underneath the purple rain

Honey, I know, I know
I know times are changing
It's time we all reach out
For something new, that means you too

You say you want a leader
But you can't seem to make up your mind
I think you better close it
And let me guide you to the purple rain

Purple rain, purple rain
Purple rain, purple rain
If you know what I'm singing about up here
C'mon, raise your hand

Purple rain, purple rain
I only want to see you
Only want to see you
In the purple rain

Let's play

Pick the highlight of my day:

My 15+ hour/day job that started emailing me at 2 am
My family bringing me to tears because I can't accommodate having a party tonight bc of above
My dog scratching my leg leaving bruises and begging me for a walk I can't do bc of above
Falling and twisting my ankle trying to get my dog out of bushes where she dug a hole for herself bc I can't play w her
Crying uncontrollably bc my former roommate sent me a message telling me to "get to the gym" because of how few steps I've taken on my Fitbit
Eating pita chip crumbs in an empty hummus container bc it was all I had time for
Knowing that I will be up until midnight
Knowing that all I want is the exact opposite of this

Or...all of the above?

FML. Or just shoot me bc I'm worth way more dead to everyone than I am alive.

Saying goodbye

Sometimes lyrics are all that's left...thanks Michelle Branch and the Muppets...
Of all the things I believed in
I just want to get it over with

Tears from behind my eyes
But I do not cry
Counting the days passed me by

I've been searching deep down in my soul
Words that I'm hearing are starting to get old
Feels like I'm starting all over again
The last three years were just pretend and I say

Goodbye to you
Goodbye to everything I thought I knew
You were the one I loved
The one thing that I tried to hold on to

I used to get lost in your eyes
And it seems like I can't live a day without you
Closing my eyes and you chase my thoughts away
To a place where I am blinded by the light but it's not right

Goodbye to you
Goodbye to everything I thought I knew
You were the one I loved
The one thing that I tried to hold on to

Ohhh yeah
It hurts to want everything & nothing at the same time
I want what's yours and I want what's mine
I want you but I'm not giving in this time

Goodbye to you
Goodbye to everything I thought I knew
You were the one I loved
The one thing that I tried to hold on to
The one thing that I tried to hold on to

Goodbye to you
Goodbye to everything I thought I knew
You were the one I loved
The one thing that I tried to hold on to

When the stars fall and I lie awake
You're my shooting star

--

Saying goodbye, going away
Seems like goodbye's such a hard thing to say
Touching a hand, wondering why
It's time for saying goodbye

Saying goodbye, why is it sad?
Make's us remember the good times we've had
Much more to say, foolish to try
It's time for saying goodbye

Don't want to leave, but we both know
Sometime's it's better to go
But somehow I know, we'll meet again
Not sure quite where, and I don't know just when
Your in my heart, So until then
It's time for saying goodbye

Somehow I know, we'll meet again
Not sure quite where, and I don't know just when
Your in my heart, So until then
Wanna smile, wanna cry
Saying goodbye

Leave it all on the field

They have a saying in sports to "leave it all on the field." It means: Hold nothing back, put it all on the line. Don't end the game feeling like you could have given more. Don't leave feeling like you played it safe when you had the opportunity for something greater.

If you give everything, there will be no questions about what you could or might have done.

Totally what's guiding me right now. Leave nothing unsaid. Give everything I have. Leave no one guessing if tomorrow never comes.

I'm no joke exhausted but I'm doing everything I can to let the people I love know exactly how I feel every chance I get.

Answered Prayers

Marijuana For Menstrual Cramps? New Jersey May Just Say Yes

Menstrual cramps may get added to the list of approved conditions for medical marijuana in New Jersey and women can thank Whoopi and Maya.
Assemblyman Tim Eustace is introducing legislation on Friday that would add conditions primarily aimed at women to the approved list of conditions for medical marijuana. "We will expand the the list to serve the population that needs it," said the assemblyman. Eustace was inspired by the new products by Whoopi Goldberg and Maya Elisabeth that were created specifically for women to relieve female pain. "We have a lot of people leaving the state for treatment and hopefully this will change that," said Eustace.

New Jersey has one of the most restrictive medical marijuana programs in the country. Governor Chris Christie has been very vocal that he's against the program that was initiated under Governor Jon Corzine. It has only authorized 6,527 patients since the registry was opened in August 2012. Only 10 conditions are approved as a qualifying illness. Severe or chronic pain is one condition, but menstrual cramps are not chronic, they are only once a month so they wouldn't be approved.
"Every month women experience pain and discomfort associated with their period. Cannabis is a wonderful remedy, and combined with other superfoods and medicinal herbs, can provide the type of relief many women need," said Ms. Elisabeth. She is the owner of Om Edibles, founded in 2008 and is one of the most innovative manufacturers in the burgeoning California medical cannabis market.
While pain is approved as a condition for some medical marijuana programs, menstrual cramps is normally not specified. Women's conditions tend to get overlooked when it comes to cannabis because its assumed that women wouldn't be interested in using cannabis. Most surveys and polls show that men outnumber women when it comes to cannabis consumption, so it's assumed women won't consider it as a medical solution.
However, Alix Hadley CEO of Craft or Citizens Research Alliance For Therapeutics, a small boutique collective that specializes in organic medicines, believes that there are more women that consume cannabis for both recreational and medicinal purposes. "They are afraid to admit it because they're moms and the risk is too high. They don't want to lose their jobs or their kids."
Her boutique in California will be one of the first to carry the Whoopi & Maya products. "So many women are already using cannabis for personal pain, endometriosis, cramps and cysts. Some use regular drugs, but many want something organic." She said she expects to get the products near April 20th. The bath salts will retail between $12-$14 and she doesn't think any of the products will cost over $35.

"I'm starting to see more and more of this specification of symptoms," said Pamela Johnson of New Jersey. She is a Director at the boutique consulting firm Electrum Partners, where she specializes in cannabis consulting. "We're seeing this in edibles and vape compounds, where the product is created for a specific symptom." She hopes that it will get the votes for approval. "It's a vote for productivity. For all the women that miss work because of this pain." Johnson even believes that in 2 years, women will be able to get the products from their doctors. "I can see OB-GYN's as a point of distribution."
Women might like that. They may not be comfortable going to a dispensary. Besides, there aren't that many treatment centers in New Jersey. Only five of the six approved treatment centers have opened and two of those were only opened towards the end of 2015. New Jersey's medical marijuana is also 33% more expensive than other states. So, these well-priced products could be just what the doctor ordered for cramps.

Happy Friday

Sometimes it's hard to pray

Sometimes it's hard to pray
Sometimes it's hard to stay grateful
It's painful, hurts so bad
Sometimes it's hard to breathe
Gets hard to keep goin'
We keep holdin' on to what could have been

But we'll get by
We'll see the light
In the morning
It's gonna be alright
The circumstance
Is in the plan
Even if we don't fully understand
Why the bad things happen to the good people

I know sometimes it's hard to be patient
Ooh I hate it
Yeah it hurts so bad
Sometimes it's hard to believe
So hard to keep goin'
We keep holdin' on to what could have been

So much pain
It's still a lesson
Sometimes it rains
It's still a blessing
You never see the silver lining
In the cloud
And so you doubt it
You never know how much you truly have
Until you go without it
One day its gonna turn into another season
Your gonna see that
All your tragedy
You had was for another reason
Its just a temporary goodbye
So ya gotta keep ya head high
The rain is coming down and its pouring
But joy is gonna come inside the morning

But we'll get by
(Bye)
We'll see the light
(Yeah)
In the morning its gonna be alright
(It's gon be ok baby)
The circumstance
(The lord got ya)
Is in the plan
(And I gotcha)
Even if we don't fully understand
Why the bad things
Happen to the good people

Do unto others...

Probably the only thing that's always stuck with me. I've tried to always live by this rule. It's cost me in almost every way. I work too hard, give too much, but for people who deserve it.

I try because I've been fortunate enough to have people who pick me up no matter how hard I fall flat on my face.

Some people aren't that lucky. Some people just don't care, no matter what good you've done.

But still, do unto others as you've had done unto you.

I'm very tired. Despite that I've been in the ER until 1 am, worked uncharted amounts of hours for weekdays and weekends. I may have even helped some people along the way.

But, no joke, I. Am. Tired.

Fool is born

2014:

I tried to do this yesterday with my friend Louis. But it is a good thing to do every day. I'm trying universe. So hard to make things come together and build a peaceful and happy coexistence. It just doesn't seem that life should be this difficult. 2015: Raymond Bradley. Awesome man. Alcoholic cereal stealer. Love him. And I'm falling a bit in a good way, letting my guard down.
